both ar very good and prolific series, the Dark Materials is more known and have a wider fanbase but the Bartimaeus booke series (early trilogi) have also some realy strong features.

exept for deamons you got spirits (or Jinns) which you channel out from pentagram and cirkles on the floor, and political schemes and ton of fantastic humor

the jinn Bartimeaus is the funniest carachter I have come across, he is über funny

the books are writen by Phillip Pullman and Jonathan Stroud, both british authors one is famous for he's atheistic profile the mr Stroud I don't know what he's reigous beleafs are but he must have a vast knowledge of sumerian, egyptian and alternative spiritualisme.

both are to me more complex types of literature which is in the universe of the likes of Harry Potter, Artimes Fowle, Garth Nix where the magic is in the real world

both  series also features travels thorough dimentions, In Bartimaeus their is the real world and the sphericial universe of the demons/spirits (which includes in strength level Imps (and lesser not identifiable farts), foliot Jinns, Afrits, Marids, and stronger beings which are way to strong to weigh (messure), you don't call for marids for other reasones that you are half mad.

in His Dark Materials their is 3-4 different spheres/realities, and different landscapes, and wierd animals, the deamon feature is quite facinating while this series takes upp Religion merged in Political agendas, Bartimaeus is more political and satirical, Bartimaeus the 5000 year old Jinn is realy funny and quite a know it all, care face attitude (and he is the Protagonist, he's master Nathaniel is sort of very sore ass, arogant and sometimes you will strangle the kid)

two of the best series I have read in fantasy, quite interesting plots and theme which makes you think

I haven't read the other one you mention, but His Darl Materials is excellent. I love the Paradise Lost references, as I myself wrote a book based on that story.
