Ridiculous. There is no such comparison. The biggest, best and most influential band of all time against an overrated Heavy Prog band...

I must admit the idea of the Beatles doing La Villa Strangiato has a certain novelty appeal.

Same here - no real comparison. Whatever one may think it's hard to vote against Beatles ...

I am a huge fan of both bands..... If I had a choice to see only one of them live in their prime.....
I am not sure which to pick
No vote for me.

It's all subjective but calling the Beatles overrated is clueless IMO. They had a huge influence on the experimental aspect of music. Rush is a great technical group but I think if the Beatles didn't cross these boundaries Rush might have never even existed in the first place. Then again I can say the Beatles might have never made it without the rock and roll music of the 50's.
"The Beatles made me feel that I could do some of the ideas I had. Every time one of their records came out I wanted to have it, particularly after "Eleanor Rigby". I just dug the effects they got, like echoes, the voice things, the writing. Like "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite". I just said "Why Can't I"? I wanted to do something else, go other places".
Stevie Wonder : Musician by Jeremy K. Brown
The Beatles will always be remembered for their songwriting first they also changed how musicians thought about albums, greatly influeced how music was recorded but of course like everyone they did not compose in a vacuum. They were well versed in pop, country, R&B, assorted styles in rock and roll, European Folk and Skiffle. During their brief life span went way beyond their roots to add classical, Indian, Motown, Funk, Stax sound, bolero, ska, reggae, vaudeville, cabaret, musical hall, modern aleatory, musique concrete, atonality, electronic music, avant garde, jazz, baroque and the extended dissonant sonorities George Harrison would explore on "I Want to Tell You"and "Only a Northern Song". Most of these areas that I mention Elvis either didn't know or didn't even touch upon. The Beatles freely added jazz harmonies, unusual time signatures and employed varying styles of vocal harmonies to their music. They composed long songs, short songs to songs with many parts.
One thing to add yes the Beatles weren't a derivative blues band like many of the British Invasion artists. There ultra melodic style, coupled with their unusual chord progressions, amazing harmonies and Paul McCartney lead bass style sometimes added on top after the band finished recordings gave their music an almost classical sound.

Rush for sure... although not as influential, they were certainly more talented and have alot more going on with their music.

Good points Floydman. The Beatles did not sell the blues back to America.
I rather think The Beatles would have happened whether Elvis or Bill Haley happened or not. Idle speculation of course but one should not discount the influence of non rock such as Tamla Motown R and B on the Beatles and The Who for a couple of examples. Not to mention the more rootsy folk and eventual folk rock progressions. The songwriting craft was well before 1954 and that was a more evident influence on The Beatles than that blues and country mix.
They weren't as bothered by the thought of being "inauthentic" like the more blues purist minded Yardbirds. Not a thought that bothered John Mayall who may have been the real point of origin of the blues side of progressive rock in Britain. His Bare Wires and Crusade albums are blues but the former a 1968 release shows some considerable development and building on the blues styles. Yet he still made sure everyone knew who and what was the foundations of his musical developments.
I think we get focused by media trying to make sense of it all and trying to narrow a birth of music to one point when really there are a myriad of origins. It's easier to think of one individual (Elvis) than it is to think of many in terms of influences on the development and progression of rock. Rock was only a minor influence on itself; seems that everything else contibuted more (sophisticated harmonies and powerful instrumentation - the Beatles and the latter especially for the Who.)

I can't say that the Beatles had better chemistry than Rush, since Rush has had the same lineup for over three decades now, more than the entirety of The Beatles career. There's never really been a rift within Rush, and they're still going strong, all these years later.

I know that but I was more talking in the sense composing, probably more the early Beatles. Paul and John were completing themself at the perfection, it was a perfect fit. Together they did so much and alone it's just bah. Together they did like 150 decent songs, alone they did what? 10 each, being generous.
