Nope- completely agree with you. But that doesn't bother me. I love Mel Gibson precisely for that- he is never acting, per se- he is "himself," much in the same way Will Smith can only play one personage, or for that matter, the amazing Morgan Freeman.

Nope- completely agree with you. But that doesn't bother me. I love Mel Gibson precisely for that- he is never acting, per se- he is "himself," much in the same way Will Smith can only play one personage, or for that matter, the amazing Morgan Freeman.

Well, fan would be too strong a word. While I've never much liked Downey, Jr, I like DiCaprio and Depp quite a bit. Depp is phenomenal, but I think directors take advantage of his incredible versatility to a fault sometimes.

Like I've suggested before . . . I think if you watch Chaplin, then turn around and watch Tropic Thunder . . . you'd be crazy to not admit that Downey has talent. 
And yeah, Burton sometimes overuses Depp and the results aren't always is inspired as they possibly could be, but Depp loves working with him, so what are ya gonna do? lol

There's a difference between "talent" and "likability." I won't say Downey doesn't have talent. But I don't really like him as an actor- that's all. There are numerous actors who fall into that category. Same as music- sure bands can be talented, but it doesn't mean I care to listen to them.
For example, my wife says Jack Nicholson and Anthony Hopkins are great actors (I absolutely love both of them), but she can't stand either one of them.
As far as Burton goes, I loved his take on the chocolate factory, but Alice was epic fail from start to end.

I can't say I really agree with what you said about talent vs. likability, either. For me, if an actor is believable and versatile in his roles, I like him. Period. I don't like hammy, shakespearean acting in cinema, because I think that's more of a skill that stage actors acquire, and not so much 'talent', as in their ability to disappear into the role. So for me, how talented the actor is and my enjoyability of his work are homogenous.
I agree on Alice. My uncle says it's one of the best films he's seen. He must be literally speaking in terms of sight, here, since the visuals are indeed pretty, but the film itself just lacks any individuality or memorability, in my view.

My problem is that it has nothing to do with the book, but just seems to be an excuse for Burton's (stellar) visuals. But as you note, visuals do not a great movie make.

I agree with both of you. Speaking of actors who play the same thing, the best example is De Niro in my opinion. He also shows that this doesn't really matter much. He's amazing. Speaking of versatility, I have to give it to Depp, yeah. He's the first and only actor who played this trick on me: he got into the character's skin so well that I couldn't recognize the actor throughout the film, though I knew him... I only understood that when watching the credits. It wasn't one of those commercial films that made him so famous through the noughties; can anyone guess what it was?
