Ozric seems more infuenced by a Hillage "Green" period and not so much Gong. I once owned everything by them. By the way, Steve Hillage on guitar and Clive Bunker on drums from the "Live Herald" recordings is unreal to me. It still stands the test of time for any fan of prog or musicians as well. His experimentation into the various styles in which developed later with his solo efforts was first truly revealed on "Angels Egg". A very strange and unique sample of Hillage's playing can be found on Gong Live 75' and live 74' with Bruford. This is was his ultimate transition as a player. All the guitar sounds that the prog world identified him with are at a peak during these performances. It's quite apart from his 73' performances with Gong when toying with ideas, adding great ones no doubt, but yet to reach the level of "Fish Rising". As a fan, I was fascinated with all of his musical growth and changes. Dave Stewart held him in the highest regard.

They were a great band. But that time is gone. Strangeitude and Erpland are long gone, and the rest of their music is not as viable or as nice ... and their live shows are not very good, specially when they do not have a sound person ... and they come off like next door's garage band!
As I mentioned above, I do not mind the Ozric Tentacles Family Band, but the touch and feel and space of the previous music is gone, and they don't have it anymore. You play well Brandy and the kid is good, but you are not capable, or have the visionary feel to create new music ... you only have notes ... and that means ... the band is over ... or as we used to say eons ago ... you just need to stop getting so stoned that you forget what the trip was all about in the first place!

Steve Hillage was always an inspirational player to me, Solar musick suite remains a fave even now. I don't know so much about Ozrics, but I was lucky enough to see them at Glastonbury in a sea of mud on the Avalon stage in the late 90's, they were good enough that I forgot about the mud!

I disagree totally. Now I don't profess to own all the Ozrics albums, but I've got a fair few and for me their best period is definitely since the turn of the millenium. Spirals In Hyperspace in particular is amazing as the band fuse space rock with trance and modern electronic music brilliantly. That is my favourite Ozrics album so far. I also happen to think The Floors Too Far Away is an excellent album too.
Each to their own I suppose.
AS for Hillage, I always preferred his solo work to Gong who were at times just a bit too weird for me. At times amazing, at times well..... For me you simply have to have Live Herald (one of the best live albums I've ever heard) and the incredible Radio Dome Music (one of the best ambient albums I've ever heard).

Hi,
I think that my Ozric collection is at ... something like 26 CD's and 2 DVD's ...
Spirals and The Floors are nice, but (again) do not have the nice punch and show that the first ones had way back when ... the music stodd out, had finesse and had strength and it had humor ... and right now, it's just the Ed Wynne show. And while I prefer Ed over Joe Satriani any day of the week, in the end, it's just a variation upon a tree of chords and songs, and it has lost the "space" and feel that it had before, with its trippy, sometimes moody, but always far out bits and pieces here and there ... I'll take a Strangeitude or Erpland anyday over those two albums ... and the fact is ... the band is still playing stuff from those albums for the fans! The music started then, not later.

NIce, a very impressive collection if I may say so  .
I know they still play a lot of older stuff, particularly off Erpland which is another great album. In fact my favourite ever Ozrics track, The Eternal Wheel is the album opener.

I can relate to this. Not that it matters anyway but, for once I do not feel all alone in this sense. You have made a point here that is so very true to me. The early titles were very special.

I've never heard of Hilage before. I'm listening to Leylines to Glassdom right now on youtube and it sounds pretty good.
If you ask me, the best Ozrics stuff is their unknown material; songs like The City Made From Sound and Swim With the Dolphin. That being said, I loved The Yum Yum Tree; I don't see where people think that they've become stale. Also, I saw them on their last tour and they sounded really good (granted, that was the first time that I've ever seen them).
