"Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman" should exclude Love Beach from the remaining dregs that occupy the list (but I do have a very soft spot in my heart for Abacab's fine production values and generally good songs).

There is no way that i thought Final Cut would be equal to the much derided Love Beach in a poll like this. Also nice to see some people sticking up for it.
I suppose every album will have its defenders...or at least those who claim it isn't so bad.

Most people probably never heard that album. In this case, and unlike Love Beach, the cover doesn't lie.

I have read "Inside Out" too, and I don't remember Mason mentioning this fact, but I may be wrong. I have to say that Mason's book is nice and well written, but "Pigs Might Fly " is based on interviews to all the PF entourage during the years. I think it's more adeherent to the reality.
just spot that your note is from the best song of Mostly Autumn...

Well, then those books are wrong. I'd rather check "Inside out", written by Nick Mason himself. The Gilmour quote, however, I've seen him say on the DVD "Inside Pink Floyd".

All this hate for The Division Bell! I guess this highlights my previous statement...I love The Division Bell, easily in my top three Floyd albums.
Pink Floyd is a band with three Pied Pipers. I choose to follow Gilmour more often than not. Even on the heavily dominated Waters albums (Animals in particular) Gilmour remains my chief emotional connexion with the band. I'm also willing to let Syd guide me down a rabbit hole now and then. But Waters...meh. Love some of his songwriting, hate his attitude. |

The story about point 6 is taken from two books: "Pigs might fly" and an italian book recently released: "The Lunatics" which is a critical edition of all the PF lyrics. On Pigs Might Fly the author says that Gilmour commented about Final Cut "If those songs didn't work for The Wall why should they work on a new album?" Tangerine Dream don't always lack rock, but Zeit is a particular one. http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=294994 This was my review of it

Gilmour is a fine Guitarist but Composer he is Not. Now Mr waters damn fine Composer and damn good Lyricist . Final Cut really was Floyds Final Cut .
I really don't get all the hate for the Final Cut to my ears damn fine album full of really good Compositions and well produced to. Edited by Hawkwise - November 03 2010 at 06:55 |

You're wrong about point 6. Waters let the band choose in 1978 between "The Wall" and "Pros and cons". There was no way that David and Nick could choose for another album than "The Final Cut". Waters even set a deadline for that album to be finished, knowing that slow worker David Gilmour wouldn't have enough time to come up with better songs himself. Point 8: Yes, Nick may be there (except for "Two suns"), but you hear much less drums than on any other Floyd album. Very much the same for point 5: Yes, Gilmour's voice is there, but only for half a song, the rest is just Waters either whispering or screaming, but never singing. Point 9: I don't know, I don't listen to Tangerine Dream ... but if it lacks rock, then I don't know if I will like it. Then again, one would probably not expect any rock from Tangerine Dream, but I certainly expect some rock on a Pink Floyd album.

For AMLOR Gilmour used songs that were ready for his new solo album so it's effectively a follow-up to about face.

High Hopes is enough to justify the whole Gilmour's career IMO.

Simply my opinions about youy points (I have started this poll so I'm feeling guilty for the poor TFC).. 1) Two Suns in the Sunset and The Gunner's Dream don't lack melody Imho. 2) I can agree about Waters' singing skills, but the worst song of the album is sung by Gilmour 3) It's a Pink Floyd album made of songs discarded from Animals and The Wall. It lacks the keyboards of Rick Wright and this is its weakness. 4) Remember that when it has been written UK were fighting against Argentina in the Falklands, the Iron Lady was Prime Minister and the British welfare was cancelled. It was the yuppies' age so reminding people about bad things happening was not so useless actually. 5) David Gilmour sings on Not Now John (point 2). I don't know if he was thinking to Waters when he was crying "f**k all that" 6) Partially right, but some songs were ready since before Animals. When Waters came to studio for the new album after the Wall he had two projects ready: TFC and Pros and Cons. The band choosed the first. 7) Rick was sent out of the band during the recording of The Wall. He took part to the tour as additional musician and not as part of the band. So he's the only person who earned some money from that disastrous tour. 8) Nick Mason was there as always. 9) Where is rock in a masterpiece like Tangerine Dreams' Zeit ? Said so, I think it's the worst Pink Floyd album, but it's still better than many other bands' masterpieces. Instead of worst I could better say "less good". |

I agree about "AMLOR" being a Gilmour solo-album (but I don't mind, it's obvious who is the better musician of those two), but "The divison bell" IS a group album. Lots of it was made by David, Rick, Nick with Guy Pratt jamming on the Astoria.
