In Norway and the rest of the Nordic countris and Holland (Netherland), Donald Duck & Co is the leading comics and most read of mainstreem comics, in US Micky Mouse is the most read and most known.

The quality Micky storys in Nordic area is  pretty low now, and the carachter himself (Micky) have evolved into this a bit over the topp confident, perfectionist, ateist (don't belive in superstion like ghost or other noncense), bragging now-it-all Gladstone Gander pales in comparison.
 
Donald and his universe is much wider and much more (I feel ) to explore, to create off, and much mroe interesting crachters to build stories on Donald Duck, Hewie, Dewie & Lewie (the Woodpecker club), Scrooge McDuck (the best storys is created around him and Donald + nephews adventures to find new earned money), Daisy Duck, Gladstone Gander, Fethry Duck, Grandma Duck (and her Farmboy) and many other
 
it happens that Micky and Donald are colaborating in same story and those story is actualy quite good. (I like Goofy though)
 
My personality and behaviour is a cross between Goofy and Gus Goose Embarrassed
 
of course the quality varies between the stories (exept) writen by those heroes mention in this poll, the masters of Donald story telling

The Carl Barks Donald duck comics are absolutely hilarious. I am not really familiar with the others you mentioned, but the man was a master.

^ you should read som Don Rose he is a master of detales and he's storys have so much nice referances, to science, philosphie, discovery and you can actualy learn somthing by reading them (I learnd much about the Finnish epic Kalevala after reading a Don Rose epic about Scrooge McDucks adventure in Finland,
 
 
but Carl Barks is epic as well and funny, but Rosa is not very far behind in qulity

this one is also a funny Rosa story (one of he's best and funniest), wicked humour and great epic story

I'm a big Barks fan, so my vote is clear. Barks is my favorite cartoonist of all time.
 
Honourable mention: the Dutch Daan Jippes, who is one of Barks' best pupils. Like Barks used to do, I admire him, and am not so fond of Don Rosa, because I like "less is more". Don's a big talent, though, I'll admit!
 
Also honourable mention: Al Taliaferro, who used to draw just one page or one column gags, which you could find with your Dutch chewing gum or on Dutch day-to-day calendars, and in the Dutch Donald Duck  magazine (of which I have about 35 years of magazines Approve )
 
But Barks is no question my absolute fave StarStarStarStarStar !

^ nice a fan Tongue (even if you are a moderate one), I don't get those who said they have outgrown Donald for me that is imposible  Hug,    if you know which animator whom creates the best storys, you seak them out, for then to read the cream of good entertainment

Never cared for Mickey or Goofy ... Donald et. al. all the way. Especially loved the pocket books!

It's Kalevala by the way.

I didn't stand in the autograph line for 5 hours for nothing. Don Rosa has retired, but he's still a favorite. You can't really compare though, Don Rosa does epic tales with huge amount of detail, while Carl Barks did funny/witty comics, that were a great inspiration for Don Rosa. He himself said he wouldnät like to be compared to his biggest idol. Nevertheless, I voted for Don Rosa.

Sorry for the misspelling (I fixed it though ), to misspell that is like cursing in a church and is blasphemous to the Suomi spirit , it is important that the old epics don't get lost in oblivion Kalevala is to you Finns, as the Heimskringla (the King Sagas), and the Eddas (Våluspa, Older and Younger Edda).

 

Both where huge influences on Tolkien’s mythological masterpiece the Silmarillian (Gandalf have I read is a mix between Odin, Väinämöinen and Jesus  )

I absolutely adore most of Don Rosa's stuff, but gotta go with uncle Carl. William van Horn is another good one, but he's done some really boring stuff as well.

You NEVER outgrow the good stories Wink , I'm 45 years old and I'm still crazy about good ol' Donald. And I still like to read some of the other good stories as well, Barks or no Barks, Donald or no Donald. A good artist is a good artist, a good story is a good story.

Quite right, it's apples and pears. They're all good in their own right, the ones mentioned in this poll!
 
Still, it's nice to see the different tastes of the PA-members, and to see if they read a good book sometimes or not LOL . Just nice to see who's a Don Rosa - admirer and who's a  Barksist (funny that the artist who resembles Karl Marx so much as it comes to the the name, was actually the one who made up the biggest capitalist, Uncle $crooge LOL).
 
BTW, Marco Rota also deserves a special mention - thanks to the thread maker : he wrote some great stories as well! Clap

sadly the americans don't know what they are missing, espesialy when Michey (sorry to say this to the first disney carachter) is booring and mondane, and totaly uninspiering, Goofy is so much more fun...
 
Americans read Donald, and to the Mickey creatonists wake upp, you are making an abomination out of the Mouse, you should all be fired, shamefull to make such a loveable creature and historical comic-creature be watered down to this tasteless, and over the topp mouse.

sometimes Etymology comes in handy, for to judge which Disney character whom have the most inspiring name and most encouraging, lets take the two leading names

Michey derives from Michael which is an archangel the name which is phonemical Micha'el, the names meaning is "Who is Like God" http://www.behindthename.com/name/michael
