You are taking a giant leap. And I'm not sure I understand the 'world as process' metaphor. Anyway - rationality and emotions don't always conflict, so it's not a battle between the two of them, where you have to make a conscious priority and 'divide' them equally. They are two very different areas of 'cognition'. Emotional behaviour can be rational as well as irrational. In the case we were discussing yesterday, I argued that it was in fact rational to grieve. I think you simplify and underestimate the status of emotions.

I don't think killing your offspring is rational.
I simply say that barring "special conditions", children should survive over adults.

I think it could be called a "logical" or "rational" choice ... but somehow I don't like the word "correct" in this situation, since at least to a certain degree it applies some kind of approval of the situation. Let's be realistic. If you're a female, of course you'll choose the child. Childbearing is a large risk for you as well as a monumental investment, while finding a willing mate is rarely a trying task. For a man, however, much of the risk is in wooing a mate. Finding a new mate could prove deadly, and childrearing is a major drag on that task. You'd have one guaranteed offspring, but when the mate could replace it threefold, the odds-on favourite is the full-grown one. Therefore, as a male, you'd probably be more inclined to save the mate. If you would make any other decision, nature is already well on its way to weeding you out.

But you know, I don't think you can really talk about death with about bringing up the afterlife. Which is not the same thing as religion but it's very closely related.
