Ooh, I'd like to sign up.  Normally I'd say don't get your hopes up but now that it's actually signed to Gearbox I'm more hopeful.

Question: Does it count as a last.fm scrobble the second the track starts playing?  Or does it only count the scrobble once the song is over?

The scrobbler is set at 50% by default. Once half of the track is played you get a scrobble. You can change it, but it 50% is the lowest setting.

You can set it to scrobble tracks anywhere from 50%-100% of the way through a song. Click on the last.fm icon on your computer and go to "Tools" > "Options" > "Scrobbling". The default is at 50%, and it won't scrobble anything that's...31 seconds or less I believe.
