At long last, this is my first time posting original music. As I say at the beginning of this video, this song was originally supposed to contain lyrics. But I couldn't seem to get the lyrics that were written for it to fit properly. After many efforts, I gave up and trimmed down the song, keeping only the instrumental portion of it. Originally entitled 'Sentinels', here is "There's No Other Way To Say It" written by me, all instruments performed by me (drums, guitars, bass, maybe some keyboards, I don't remember). This was recorded back in my infancy of recording multitrack music on the computer. The mix isn't very good, but it's okay as an archive. :) If you have a good set of headphones and can crank it up, you just might hear some bass. :) Also be sure to listen at 480p quality, not 360p. (gotta soak up all the quality you can find. :) ) Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for listening! |

I actually hear the bass just fine.
It's lot heavier and jazzier and more of a jam than I expected (based on the title and the many pictures of acoustic guitars). Yes, it is a bit muddy, but still an exciting and well-performed instrumental. Love the variety of guitar textures. Cool stuff man- as usual, thanks for sharing! |

Nicely recorded Chris. It's a good mix for my laptop which acts as an auto EQ-forgiverizer (patent pending). As an engineer and producer multi-instrumentalist always amaze me. I work with a multi-instrumental keyboardist/composer and sometimes write lyrics for him. Let me know if you need any help in this area. My biggest critique would be to try and develop a stronger sense of 'song' so that it doesn't sound so much like a jam. I realize some people like this but providing more structure and definition to the writing will most certainly strengthen your compositions. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the feedback, JD! This song was recorded back in 2002, when I was quite new to recording with computer. As I mentioned, it was originally supposed to contain lyrics, the mid instrumental section was supposed to sound 'jammy' I guess, but yes, more structure would be good. Great feedback, thanks!

I prefer the shorter sections where it's not so busy all the time, but the skill is certainly there. You're a better player than I'll ever be! Overall, I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing!

Hi all. Here's a song that I
wrote the music for and recorded myself playing all the instruments back in
2004. This has been posted to Youtube. Here's the write up I posted along with
the video:

I didn't listen to the song, but the way you wrote this post, reminds me of Daniel Gidenlow from Pain of Salvation. Why? Because he also likes to write several hundred words to explain his music. That's sweet. You like to be with your family. Daniel also likes his family, as he wrote songs for his wife and kids.
You even said "I decided to take a trip down memory lane". Daniel also mentioned "down a memory lane" in an article about his masterpiece album Remedy Lane. The way you talk about yourself, it feels like you're from a famous band and people already know the name Chris Lawley. Although I had never heard that name before, now I feel like I know you. I guess what I'm trying to say is that musicians should talk about their lives more often, so we as listeners can feel the emotions in their music better. P.S. The Lego film technique you mentioned, it's called "Stop-motion animation film". Classic UK shows like Bob the Builder and Postman Pat are shot the same way. It's nice to know that a prog musician also makes animation films. |

Time for a new list: List of one-man projects who play every instrument and write everything all by themselves. Wintersun comes to mind. On "their"(his) debut album, Jari Mäenpää wrote everything and played everything: guitars, bass, vocals, synths, except for the drums. That said, Chris Lawley remains the purest one-man projects in the world. Oh I can see that Chris is embarassed as he reads my post. I'm just kidding my friend. |
