And over to another matter again which annoys an old & putrid man like myself: One paragraphs reviews. In particular those done by Collabs. It is enough to make my eyes hurt and my brain bang against my cranium.

Please use the <p> function to set the paragraphs, guys.

^ I just use (ENTER) and it works anyway. However, when editing review through edit function, the review is completely messed up. However, it looks fine, so I don't mind.

It looks like these one big paragraph reviews are almost trademark of some of our collaborators. I personally don't like them as much as others, but I don't have too much against them. It's better with paragraphs though.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Completely agree with Finnforest on this matter. Looks like Mr. Wilson is a tad too sensitive on people writing reviews on his stuff. In stead, he should be happy that his work seems to inspire so many people to write and comment about it - pretty sure he's got himself a bucketload of fans from all of our 'crappy writings'.

And it might just be me, but what I see written down as 'reviews' in many paper publications surely isn't any better. As long as I still bump into 'official' publications that don't even get the names of band members written down correctly quite regularly, I don't see what's the big deal with the stuff we write down on PA.

Not an intelligent move to complain about us, Steven. Rather, an arrogant one.

Well, except 1985, I can just say that it's not like I will stop liking Porcupine Tree's music because of this interview, because of his words. It's certainly stab to the back from him to our opinion about him as a person, but because I'm trying to find positive thing on every thing, even bad ones, let's just say that I take it as that we should try to write responsibly. We all know about people who are using only two ratings, 1 star and 5 stars, using cool and great over and over again, fanboyism shining high.

Lets just take it as a message to improve ourselves.

Wilson's music has been among my favourites for over 15 years now, I went to his shows when they were still held in small clubs in back alleys, and as long as he keeps up his high level of music, I will keep on supporting the guy, whatever he says. :)
I really like your positive take on the matter, and yes, of course Wilson does have a point - seeing some of those obviously fanboy/hater-reviews makes me cringe as well. But then, not everyone has English as his/her first language, let alone an Oxford Ph.D. in literature, and in my personal case, some perhaps a little bit clumsily written reviews can still evoke interest in certain bands/music.

Thumbs Up seconded! But I might well never even get near to Wilson's standards... oh what the hell, at least I'm trying! :)

Same here.
BTW, how come that every time that I post a review, all my '-' tags have changed to '?'s? Am I doing something wrong, there, or is it just a glitch in the system? I usually end up posting my review, looking at the outcome, and spent editing out all those weird changes thereafter.

The worst thing is when the system breaks your tag (bold one for example) like that:

</
b>

Which will result in unfinished tag problem and will affect the rest of your review and usually also reviews that are under yours (on main page, on album page).

I too always look on main page, often also just to see how it look like, if I should add more (or less) paragraphs, if I should add more information etc. And to fix errors, of course.

It's strange how similar our problems are. I usually end up with "?" when I try to use some odd characters (but usual in my Czech language), like ě-š-č-ř-ž-ý-á-í-é (not even to speak about ň, ď and ť), while some of them works, others don't and use of them will result in "?".

But it's not Ota Petrina, it's Ota Petřina and I would like to be able to use his name properly.

@ Antennas: If you copy/paste a review from MS word,  lots of weird stuff can happen. Whenever I use an ellipsis (...) it turns into a ? as well. It also sometimes does it when I use a dash (-).

This is because Word automatically makes your three individual periods turn into a single character (an ellipsis or dash).  The review system here does not recognize this new character.

All you must do when you're writing your review in Word, and you create an ellipsis by writing three periods in succession (or an auto-formatted dash) is backspace against it to remove the auto-formatting.

I use it sometimes, but I have problem with "word wrapping". Well, when you write without it, you just reach end of the screen and continues writing with beginning of the line suddenly outside left edge of screen. This can be quite confusing to manage. I like to look on my review in its entirety.

So there's option for "word wrap", but when I use it, copied review to PA's form looks very messed up.

So Notepad is choice with its flaws for me as well.

I'd say he's surely got a point (as yes, the Internet does allow every bum & his dog to comment on everything, actual-knowledge about things-be-damned Dead), but I think it's just too harsh of him to dismiss all of 'amateure reviewers' (like us, I suppose).

There are ways to avoid this, like
 - using Wordpad, which is perfect because it doesn't make those long lines like Notepad, and it doesn't add formatting bullsh*t like Word does
- writing in Word, then copy+paste in Notepad, save it like a txt document, then copy+paste the text from there (you will have gotten rid of the Word formatting bullsh*t this way)
Thumbs Up

It's crazy, it simply is. But I understand that these are ways how to do it. And we have to comply to the system, rather than system complying to individual (which is impossible).

Cheers!

Interesting points he makes. None of it has any merit though as if there were no CD reviewers Cd sales would plumemt. There are enough good PT reviews to keep Steven afloat and the bad reviews are quite worthless unless backed up by solid evidence as to why the Cd is terrible.

I'm pretty sure you can turn off auto formatting in Word.
