Led Zeppelin is not Prog, but...

 

I've never been a huge fan of Zeppelin overall, but I can certainly understand why they are who they are. But the other day I created a Prog station on Pandora by typing in King Crimson. It's playing a ton of the usual suspects: KC, Yes, Genesis, Zappa, Pink Floyd, Rush, Porcupine Tree, etc. It even threw in some Adrian Belew and Tony Levin solo stuff which was cool. But there were a couple times over the course of the 3 or 4 hours where I was listening that it would drop in some Led Zeppelin (not the hits, but deeper cuts). It actually surprised me how much I enjoyed it...it fit in perfectly. It makes me want to dig into the Zep catalog...I never really have before.

 

Who knew?

 

Not that it matters, because their whole discography is immense! And I agree that they are best when performing electric blues or acoustic folk, those first few albums are just timeless.

 

If I may recommend, you should visit the two albums I mentioned above too. Much of Phys Graf is made of cuts from those two albums' sessions in the first place!

They definitely had the chops to go into some more intricate passages and time signatures, but they were content with what they had. Until the last album.

 

But now you mention it, In My Time of Dying is probably my favourite track from the album. It's energetic and fun. But I can't distinguish between half of the straight-rock cuts on the second disc, and time spent 'boogie-ing with Stu' could have been spent making Ten Years Gone and Sick Again less muddy! Just my view anyway.

Totally disagree, and the Zep fan i know thinks its their best album. depends on the zep fan i suppose, but the consensus that I get personally agrees with me.
