...when I hear Zep in the midst of a bunch of Prog, it seems to fit nicely.

I've never been a huge fan of Zeppelin overall, but I can certainly understand why they are who they are. But the other day I created a Prog station on Pandora by typing in King Crimson. It's playing a ton of the usual suspects: KC, Yes, Genesis, Zappa, Pink Floyd, Rush, Porcupine Tree, etc. It even threw in some Adrian Belew and Tony Levin solo stuff which was cool. But there were a couple times over the course of the 3 or 4 hours where I was listening that it would drop in some Led Zeppelin (not the hits, but deeper cuts). It actually surprised me how much I enjoyed it...it fit in perfectly. It makes me want to dig into the Zep catalog...I never really have before.

Who knew?

I used to listen to Led Zeppelin all the time but some 30 years later whenever I listen I find myself quickly finding something else. However i always remember that Physical Graffiti was my favorite and I dont have it. I may just have to buy it again.

One of the finest studio rock acts of all times, with some decidedly prog moments. As with Tull, I actually preferred their folkier leanings.

I think of Physcial Graffiti's "In the Light" as great Zep-prog, but a PA poll turned up for #1 Houses' "No Quarter" (one of my fave Zep songs:

To me Zeppelin is a blues band with serious attitude.....and that is where I find the connection with prog. But more than anything I consider them a heavy hard rockin blues band.

I considered Carouselambra to be one of their proggiest songs as a result of the use of keyboards and it seemed to be a direction that they were heading in near the end.

Like I said, I know they're not part of the Prog iconology and are considered a Rock/Blues band but I was just surprised how well the songs I heard fit amongs the more Prog fare.

I'll have see about digging into the LZ catalog...starting with Physical Graffiti, I suppose.

It's weird that Physical Graffiti is quite well-liked on this site in particular; I think it's okay but not good enough to be worthy of two discs, and that's kind of the general consensus from Zep fans. But proggers on here often praise it, even though 'Houses' and 'Led Zep IV' are considerably proggier (save for the odd track).

Not that it matters, because their whole discography is immense! And I agree that they are best when performing electric blues or acoustic folk, those first few albums are just timeless.

If I may recommend, you should visit the two albums I mentioned above too. Much of Phys Graf is made of cuts from those two albums' sessions in the first place!

^ Those were the days of the Double Album.......everyone was doing it not just the proggier rock bands. Funk and R&B bands were issuing the double albums too.....Remember a dbl VINYL album was still only maybe 80 min long.

Physical Graffiti is almost my favorite Zepp album. It has that 4 guys playing in a room sound to it. Crank up In My Time of Dying and you see what I mean. Too bad it has possibly the thinnest production of all their albums. Kashmir floats by on majesty alone, but where's the kick drum?

They definitely had the chops to go into some more intricate passages and time signatures, but they were content with what they had. Until the last album.

Me too, and it's also one of my favourite Led Zeppelin tracks. And In Through the Out Door is an album I like much more than most at PA.  That, Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy are probably my favourite Led Zep albums.

Anyone mention Achilles Last Stand from Presence yet? Never a Zep favourite of mine, but one that often gets mentioned: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFRFtnTd620

And just because this is one of my favourite Zep tracks (from IV) due to a particular synth passage:

...Still don't think they had enough good songs for four sides.

But now you mention it, In My Time of Dying is probably my favourite track from the album. It's energetic and fun. But I can't distinguish between half of the straight-rock cuts on the second disc, and time spent 'boogie-ing with Stu' could have been spent making Ten Years Gone and Sick Again less muddy! Just my view anyway.

It appears that Zep is diverse enough to cause a broad range of reactions and "best album" opinions amongst fans. Reading the posts here has got me excited about checking out LZ more deeply...

Not from this Zep fan. I think it's a consistently excellent album, the only track I don't really think much of is the last one. It's a more consistent album than The White Album and a lot of other double studio albums I could name.
