That's a really big if though...

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Try Jriver media player, it's very similar to itunes but without all the crap.

and lately i've been playing with songbird, is like itunes but it doesnt rape your computer's processor.

I mainly use Windows Media Player, but it seems limited on its own. I use MediaMonkey because it also converts files. They claim it will take WinAmp visualisers if you install them manually (in program files), but I cannot get this to work.

It's interesting. Pardon me if I mentioned this already. My portable is a Zune. I typically use Windows Media Player at work and I typically use the Zune player on my computer at home.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

A good friend of mine (who is really into tech stuff) highly praises VLC: that thing swallows everything. You name the file extension, it's there.

I must mention Cool Edit (lately Adobe Audition). It's not a player, it's a recording software...but it can read .txt files. I couldn't believe it can read old IFF 8SVX Amiga files!

For me it's WinAmp for costom makng my own playlists and on-line radio.

For recording vinyl, I use a Magix music editor program using the virtual project file format.

the probleme get very wild wen you have 1500 cds and more !totaly unmanagebel with itune and many others .Window media 11 will manage about 15000 cds and window media center will do 50000 cds for more than that there are special system .i have about 6700 cds on my computer 6000 Prog ,Picture and genre are a must and dont share media info it cut the music all the time wen you listen and it p?&%#! when i say unmanagebel it jam ofen let say to have it right for me it is time consuming and thanks to PROGARCHIVE.COM for all they info i figure about 30 t0 60 minutes per cd to maket right

It will read anything. Unfortunately i haven't found a way to store anything with it or make a playlist.

I gotta say itunes is the easiest to use. It's built to manage a large collection very well. I'd like to see a parametric EQ feature, but you can pump volume levels if needed.

It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen.

I played with VLC briefly. It was a decent if you have a capable computer drive that didn't come with the software to decode surround sound. I was in desperation for something to make surround sound happen on this PC and that was the first free solution I came across. It behaved a little skippy when pausing, but did the job.

These days for basic playing on a computer I like winamp with a lyrics plug in. I still rip with Windows Media Player. And I use the Zune software for playlists and interface with the player.

I just downloaded MusicBee and I have to say I'm lovin' it. Some features:
-iPod Syncing. Yes, it can sync with your iPod (as long as it's below iOS 4, but I have a NaNo so that doesn't matter). In addition, it'll automatically convert the files in your library to an iPod friendly format when you sync it, so you can keep all of your music in FLAC form and still sync it to your iPod if you wish.
-Internet Radio. It has the ability to play a whole bunch of internet radio stations (including Last.fm) from the client. This is great for me, since I sometimes have no idea what to listen to, so I can just fire up the radio.
-Mini player. Most media players have a mini player, but MusicBee's is nice because you can anchor it to the top or bottom of your screen and then set it to minimize to that.
-Now Playing Playlists! I really like this feature, personally. If you've used Grooveshark you may have an idea of how this works. Basically you can add queue songs of your choice to your Now Playing playlist and they'll play one after another, but the playlist doesn't save like making an actual playlist. I honestly have no idea why all media players don't have this feature, it's really nice.
-Audio DJ. A sort of Pandora-like feature that makes an instant infinite playlist of music in your library similar to the song you choose and then plays it.
-More info. Artist info, automatically downloaded album art and lyrics, and such.
-It's also just generally better laid out and more customizable than iTunes.
-And it's free. :)
-There's also a bunch of organization features and stuff that I haven't really explored.

I realize this sounds like an advertisement, but I'm just impressed with the software and it seems like a very nice iTunes alternative/improvement. Also has plugin support, so it can only get better.
