I like more the electric melodic solos, so in this vein are Gilmour, Hackett and Latimer. As a Genesis fan I will go with Hackett.

There's WAY too many guitarists listed here....but I went with Hackett.

Although Howe, Lifeson, McLaughlin, di Meola, and Fripp could've had my vote too Tongue

Today, I'll chose Howe. Yesterday I might have chosen Hackett. Nimodo.

1. Zappa (maybe not the most technical guitarist, but his note-selection and classical/jazz influenced bites are amazing)
2. Gilmour
3. Tommy Bolin
4. John McLaughlin
5. Carlos Santana
6. Steve Howe
7. Allan Holdsworth
8. Andy Latimer
9. Robert Fripp

King Robert I.

I´m astonished he doesn´t lead anymore. By the way, Roye Albrighton from Nektar is missing here. Also Peter Banks (Yes, Flash) is underrated, god knows why.

For me it's a question of feelings. I'm more moved by Gilmour and Latimer, but this doesn't mean that I don't like Hackett or McLaughlin.

Oh, I wasn't criticizing you or anything, I just somehow always forget how popular Pink Floyd is, and how emotionally invested in them people get.

I'm not feeling criticized. I just wanted to clarify the reasons of a choice. Emotional is the right word. Smile

Very difficult to choose.. I wonder how many of todays guitarists will be remembered and highly regarded 30 years after their glory days?

Although, obviously some of these masters are still going strong!

I'm going to go for Fripp, with Hackett and Zappa in close joint second, and Mr Lifeson not far behind them..

Well, I did say it was difficult to choose..
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Tough call this.

I know everyone raves about Hackett but to be honest you don't really hear him that much with Genesis.  Clearly the "main man" in Genesis was always Mr Banks with Hackett very much in the back seat.  Hackett's solo stuff gives him more chance to shine but he definitely wouldn't be my choice.

Gilmour is a big fave of mine, lovely languid style and great feeling. My favourite yes, but best?  Probably not.

Akkerman is well worth a mention too.

I'll go for Howe though, he appears the best to me, and with such an individual style and wonderful emotion in his playing.

Latimer.

Hackett, Green  and Akkerman are also fabulous and Gilmour is very melodic.

David Gilmour, though not the most flash guitarist in the world, he expresses emotion in his solo's, like no other guitarist I have ever heard. It's not about manual dexterity for me, it's about playing from the heart, and feeling. I have seen some of the best guitarist's in the world, but the only one to ever reduce me to tears at a gig, was Gilmour. I have admiration for all the other's mentioned, especially Hackett and Latimer, but Gilmour is, and always will be, the man!!Wink

Enough votes for Fripp, Hackett and Gilmour.

I'll go with an overlooked favorite of mine, Alex Lifeson: both excellent riffs and delirious solos!
