Oddly enough, that may be why I like it. LOL

I would put it that it hearkens back to earlier Metheny.  I've found his more recent stuff to be generically Metheny.  You can hear something for the first time and know it's Pat.  I still find it to be an interesting experiment.  Oh crap, I've almost written a review.  Excuse me if I use some of this if I do a review.

Like I said, it's not bad, but if I want to listen to ol' Pat, I listen to ol' Pat. Wink American Garage, s/t, Watercolours, As Falls Wichita... and Offramp.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the whole thing now, it's not accessible but you already have experience with these type of albums. (A Passion Play, Tales, etc)
 
I love it because of it has a really cool jazzy touch that no other Crimson album has, Mel Collins has a lot of space to play.

You might be interested in the 2 albums above :
 
- the Larry Goldings CD was released in 2007 and is mainly ambient music (Larry Goldings is a jazz organist, but here the music is very quiet and intimate, he plays synthesizer, piano, Hammond B3, and the accompaniement is very occasional (a percussionist, a guitarist and on two tracks only a drummer)
 
- L'Image is a project featuring Mike Mainieri (vibraphonist, one of the co-founders of Steps Ahead), Tony Levin, Steve Gadd, David Spinizza (a guitarist)), and Warren Bernhardt). They released their unique album in 2009, some 35 years after the project germinated in the brain of Mike Mainieri, Steve Gadd and Tony Levin. It's somewhere between space-age pop (Mancini, Esquivel, Martin Denny) and the jazz-rock of Dave Pike Set. Very "loungey" music but complex enough to please a proghead,
