Delirium Records released a double sampler of their bands as Pick'n'Mix, for a remarkably cheap price. I don't think you can go wrong but get a copy and check out a lot of 90's British bands - Sons Of Selina amongst others caught my ears as new space rock.

I saw that the first 4 Can albums have been remastered and reissued very recently- and got reviewed in the Times on Saturday, with Tago Mago getting the maximum 5 stars there.

...and I should think so!
The 1st 4 Can albums are still blinding - absolutely timeless, rhythmic mayhem that everyone should listen to...
Thx for the heads-up on the re-masters - must track them down

Try some Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf, then.
German beer and French wine are good too!

and perhaps vice versa, but not immediately after each other. And talking vice......................

Peter,
You'll be recommending Mario Lanza next - or Alan Jones (I think). His Donkey Serenade seemed to get featured most Sunday afternoons in the ancient movies on TV in the 60's : There's a song in my heart, don't you hear it senorita... don't write lyrics like that anymore......................

well...everything from the german scene is highly recommended
the Berlin Scene: Ash ra tempel, Mythos, Cluster,Agitations free (for long space electronic & psych rock jammings)
The West scene: Kraftwerk, Neu!, Floh De Cologne...(for political, minimalist industrial but sometimes space compositions)
The Munich Scene: Popol Vuh, Amon Duul, Gila, Embryo...(for psych, folk ethnic & free jazz)

Actually Camembert is more in the spirit of Soft Machine and the subsequent Canterbury scene. Gong's space period really began with 'Angel's egg' and ended with the following opus : 'You'. After these releases, they turned towards jazz-rock.

Check out 'Synchronicité', not a french version of Police's album but Patrick Forgas' last album. It was released on Musea, a label devoted to (re)release (mainly) prog artists. It can be seen as "ambient" music but it has a slighty jazz feel to it. If you want some more infos on this album, read my review of it on this site.
