Might be old news, but two tracks from Aranis' new album are available to listen to on the band's Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/aranis

The addition of drums/percussion by Dave Kerman works well from what I've heard so far.

Assaf, if your around, do you still get sent stuff from RAIG? (or keep up with what they're putting out). The Won James Won tape 'Corpus Unhearmeticum' came in the mail the other day. You got any thoughts? Seems pretty solid so far. Cut and diced experimental rock.

Hey Adam Big smile

I was getting drowned with promo's so I asked Igor for a time-off with what he sends me; I might resume if I can get some of the load off at work.
I'll get hold of that Won James Won release, though.
What's up with you these days? What part of the world are you now?

mmm... understandable, over the last year or so I've cut back considerable on my intake, more for my sanity than anything else.  Hopefully work will let off, you still in the lab?
I'm well. Moved houses a couple of times, spent part of this year in Southern US/North Mexico, but overall its been pretty quite.

Hey Patrick,

May I suggest just a few:

Scott johnson - Americans (avant-garde)
Extra Life - Made Flesh (if you liked his first album, you'll like this)
Thelema Trio - Neither From, Nor Towards... (chamber)
Combat Astronomy - Earth Divided by Zero (brutal/avant; the album is for streaming on their Bandcamp)
Chrome Hoof - Crush Depth (eclectic/heavy/avant-ish)
Rebel Wheel - We are in the time of evil clocks (eclectic/dark/avant-ish)
Zs - New slaves (getting quite experimental with this one, avant-garde)
Elephant9 - Walk the Nile (if you liked their first, try this as well)
Zoe Keating - Into the trees (chamber, cello-lead)
French TV - I forgive you for all my unhapiness (their usual self, funny, but less "avant", more eclectic/Canterbury/jazzy/symph-y).

There's a new Chrome Hoof album? Why was I not informed of this sooner?!

Elephant9 - Walk the Nile - I found this a bit indigestible, but I'll give it another go.

Great album, but not something that I'd recomment to an avanthead - how did you find them, Chris? Via the Shining connection?

Hmm. That's nice music n' all, but is it just me or are there a few too many of these chamber-prog bands these days? I guess I'm still not a massive fan of Univers Zero or Present (arguably the progenitors of this sound), but it seems to be a predominant form of music becoming "adopted" by avant-prog fans despite more recent exponents (Aranis, for example) seemingly having little to do with either prog or avant-garde music.

I really don't want this to come across as being needlessly negative, but I just feel like it's reaching saturation point. These bands just don't excite me, they seem more content to play within a certain 'style', fixed parameters, almost consciously harking back to bands from the past rather than attempting to push things forward (which is what I always kinda assumed the 'avant' part of 'avant-prog' stood for). What do you guys think?

I agree with you, actually, David.

I love Univers Zéro, Shub-Niggurath and some Present (they're a bit hit and miss).  However, I'm pretty ambivalent toward Aranis, Far Corner and NeBeLNeST.

I do very much enjoy Zaar, Sotos and Ahvak though.  So it depends on what sound they create, for me.

I agree with most everything here; love these bands etc.  but I recently gave the latest Far Corner another listen and well it's excellent.  That fretless bass playing makes it great.  But not just that, it is reasonably complex and the compositions are enjoyable and dark.  I'm not just biased because they are from my state either... Wink  It's been ages since I listened to NeBeLNest though.  Aranis I have never heard... but if it has Dave Kerman involved I will give it a listen...

Only the as-yet-released new Aranis album features Dave Kerman.  Previous albums didn't feature a drummer at all and thus were mainly just chamber music without much rock or prog involved.

They're not bad but I actually prefer Kronos Quartet.

I think you get this problem across the entire spectrum of "prog"; that is, there will always be a good number of modern bands that perhaps borrow too heavily on their influences and are content to recreate a style that's been established long ago, or at least as you put it constrain themselves tightly within certain parameters - the bands that are providing something novel will always be in a small minority.

I have a "Henry Cow" radio station on Pandora - it's amazing how many bands appear to make a conscious decision to "sound RIO", which unfortunately can lead to some monotony, as you have alluded to.

Is there a new Jean Louis slated for this year?  Or has it already come out?
