Being something of a setlist nerd this bit made me sad. The Flower Kings have much a vast pool of material to draw from, I always thought it was strange that they had such a high number of "set standards". I was under  the impression that they played a lot of the same songs because they were easier to play or more well rehearsed. I mean, do people really want to hear Stardust Part 3 that badly? Just drop it from the set if it bothers you that much.

I honestly wouldn't mind a big setlist rehaul if they tour again. Maybe replace The Truth with an abridged Garden of Dreams or Devil's Playground. Bring back a few of their old live greats like Go West Judas. Maybe a bit more improv and jamming as well. They're so good at jamming, in fact, I'm surprised they haven't tried promoting themselves more in that scene.

I agree about the set lists.  I never got the sense that people expected to hear certain songs.  I always wanted them to pull out stuff that hadn't been played live before (there is a lot of it).  I would have loved to hear "The Road Back Home", "Serious Dreamers", "Monster Within", "Driver's Seat", even things like "Grand Old World" and "Silent Sorrow"  (though the instrumental section of that song is on the Carpe Diem live CD).

From the first album I heard, Retropolis, I thought they'd fit right into the jam band scene (though they are a bit more varied and symphonic than any of those bands).  It seems to me, in the US at least, that they could increase their audience quite a bit by associating themselves with that scene.

Gus,

I agree on two of your songs, I'd love to hear Serious Dreamers and Grand Old World.  Devil's Danceschool comes to mind as well.

Hmm,

This leads to an interesting activity...  Design a two hour concert omitting the standards...

No "I am the Sun", "The Truth Will Set You Free", "Stardust We Are" and I'm omitting "Garden of Dreams" as well.

You can have a two hour concert and a two song encore (which gives you the opportunity for a two hour and fifty minute concert if your encore is "Love is the Only Answer" and "The Devil's Playground".

I'll post my concert some time over the long weekend (which for me starts in two hours).

^That's an awesome idea. Flipping and grilling my setlist bergers as we speak, will have a killer setlist by tomorrow evening.

All I can say is it will definitely include a Go West Judas opener.

Of course you guys realize they've performed Love Is The Only Answer, Devil's Playground and Go West Judas before.  I've got live recordings of all of them. Big smile   However, those songs are not "standards" I suppose, as I believe all of them only got played on a single tour each (unlike Stardust Part III, The Truth, and even Garden Of Dreams which were all on multiple tours).  The ones I listed have never (as far as I'm able to tell) been performed live before (except, as I noted, the instrumental section of Silent Sorrow).

It's actually pretty amazing just how much of their catalog HAS been featured in live shows.  But there is still plenty that they've never done before, and a lot that was only done for one tour.

Set-list:

1. The Flower King
2. A King's Prayer
3. Love Supreme
4. Adam & Eve
5. Monkey Business
6. Monsters & Men
7. Retropolis
8. The Magic Circus of Zeb
9. Astral Dog

I would be okay with that, I know it's less than two hours.

This is what I've come up with:

Go West Judas
Compassion
Sword Of God
Cosmic Circus>
Kingdom Of Lies
Magic Circus of Zeb
Rumblefish Twist>Drum&Bassolo
Anar Dig (Kaipa Cover)>
What if God Is Alone
The Judas Kiss
Man Overboard>Solitary Shell>Devil's Playground

Encore:
Astral Dog
Life In Motion

---

Barely over 2 hours even with the encores. Includes at least one song from each album (plus one from The Flower King and a Kaipa cover that they'd destroy). A pretty good balance of rockers, jams, somber numbers, instrumentals, and ballads. Also lots of "intos" (as a former jam band fan I'm a sucker for intos).

This would pretty much be the ultimate setlist for me. They'd likely never play anything like it but a girl can dream.

Ok, so here's what I've come up with:

In the Eyes of the World
Adam & Eve
Minor Giant Steps
Flora Majora
Grand Old World (I thought about using this as an opener to really mess with people but decided against it)
Serious Dreamers
There is More to This World
IKEA by Night (Pablo, I can't believe that you missed this one)
Astral Dog
Life Will Kill You
A King's Prayer
Just This Once
One More Time
World of Adventures

Encore:

Humanizzimo
End of a High Note

I'd still like to hear the standards that were omitted, especially all of "I Am the Sun".

Things I would have liked to keep on the set list but just didn't have the time:

Pioneers of Aviation
Trading My Soul
Hudson River Siren's Call (totally)
Magic Pie (Uh Yep)
The Devil's Danceschool
Too Late for Tomatoes

Though, in all honesty, I'd really be happy just seeing them again.

^Thought about including Humanizzimo due to the encore rule, but decided to keep my set in the realm of the physically possible. Wouldn't want to torture the poor old guys with too many epics after all.

Also planned my setlist with the most recent touring lineup in mind, so Gildenlow sung songs like "Adam & Eve" and "Fast Lane" were automatically omitted, as was "Ikea By Night" (a very personal song for Jamie Salazar so it would be weird for a different drummer to be playing it imo). Though I realize that it will most likely be completely different lineup by the time they get around to touring again. (Hopefully with the core trio of Stolt/Froberg/Reingold and maybe Bodin).

I quite like the other proposed setlists though. They all work well despite being very different. If Roine ever reads this (doubt it) he should take note that he doesn't have to play the same songs every tour. But he should bring back Astral Dog!

Me thinks that you're looking a little too deeply into a four second drum fill...unless that's a joke in which case...LOL

^I'm only partially joking. Any drummer could play "Ikea By Night" but it would still feel weird to me seeing Erik Hammerstrom or someone else play it. It would be like Alan White playing "Five Percent For Nothing" at a Yes concert. I wouldn't mind if he played his own unique fill with a similar style, but not that particular one.

It's been stated in this thread before, but "Ikea By Night" was a song that represented Salazar's role in the band at the time. He recorded his parts quickly, because he wanted to get the hot dogs at Ikea before they stopped serving them. This also foreshadowed his future role in the band (especially on the Rainmaker) as more of a session guy who wasn't really creatively involved, which would lead to his departure and replacement.

By all means, if your hypothetical Flower Kings setlist hypothetically includes Jamie Salazar on the drums, that's cool. But I'd hypothetically bring back Zoltan first, and am currently hypothetically happy with the possibility of Erik Hammarstrom's return

I was quite impressed with Erik Hammarstrom's performance on the last tour and really hope he stays with the band. He seemed really keen on doing everything he could to please the band and addressed Roine's complaints about previous drummers really well. He kept his drums tuned (something Jamie got lazy about), didn't miss any signature fills (something Zoltan was occasionally guilty of) and didn't have a crappy drumsound or prior obligations to a pop band (Marcus Lillequist).

^ Wow, I've got to admit, in the time that it took me to read that post I listened to the song ten times.

Sorry guys, not been around much lately Embarrassed.

This is an interesting idea Tom, I know you love these "setlist" topics.  I'll have a think about it today and I'll post mine later - I promise not to include all the really big stuff!!!

You know, you could pretty much pull out any TFK songs and get a great setlist, but........ that wouldn't be fun.  So after a great deal of thought, here goes:-

Sodium Regale (intro)
Monsters and Men
Cosmic Circus/Babylon
Retropolis
Monkey Business
Adam and Eve
Just This Once
Deaf Numb and Blind
Dissonata
The Man Who Walked With Kings
Trading My Soul
Self Consuming Fire
Sword of God
The Merrygoround
Drivers Seat
-----------------------------
A King's Prayer
World of Adventures

I tried to feature all the albums too (nice idea Harry).  To be honest, I'd settle for any setlist from them at the moment LOL.

That's an excellent setlist! I'd love to see that! Big smile   I might swap out the Kaipa track for another TFK track, but I'd be happy either way.

Genesis/Yes/Rush/Marillion/VDGG&PH/The Flower Kings/Zappa/Änglagård/Wobbler/PFM/Banco/Le Orme/Jethro Tull/Spock's Beard/Transatlantic/Ayreon/Beardfish/IQ/Dream Theater/Opeth/P.Tree/Arena/Camel/Kaipa!

Have to say, I'd love to see ANY of these set list ideas.  But the one I'd most like to see, is the one Roine comes up with when (if?) they tour again Big smile

Tell you what guys, I'm honestly pumped for the new Agents of Mercy album and tour. So much so that I honestly wouldn't mind if the Agents become a full time band in place of the Flower Kings.

I mean, I sorta doubt that will happen but if it does then Sum of No Evil is one hell of a swan song.
