can anyone recommend me a good plugin for firefox that blocks advertisements?  I really would prefer one that doesn't add some kind of stupid toolbar

Are you sure you want to risk missing some important advertisement . . . an advertisement that could change your life? For instance, what if you suddenly feel like you want a Korean wife or a larger penis and you can't think of where to get one? Well, that's exactly what those ads are for. They are there for you. Don't block them.

Haha, well that is a valid point, however I'm not a giant fan of the trojans that sometimes accompany them, depending on the seediness of the site (although I've gotten things from failblog, imageshack, photobucket, and other theoretically reputable sites)

The best ad-blocker I know of (and use) is Quero Toolbar, although if you don't want a toolbar, then it's not going to be of much use to you.

Just a suggestion.  Geek

Greasemonkey can be used with user made scripts from userscripts.org to block ads from particular sites; here are some which you might like.

Grooveshark ad blocker - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/84896
Last.fm ad blocker - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/74283
Youtube ad blocker - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/68278

And there's millions (literally) of other addons which you might like with Greasemonkey, like a last.fm page updater and new themes for some sites.

All you have to do is install greasemonkey then hit the install buttons on the Userscript pages.

Darn.

You can choose to have the ABP icon show up in your toolbar or status bar, or neither. I keep the icon in my status bar for quick access in case I need to disable it.
