He's always saying something about St. Anger.
Yeah, I'm an ME student and am also pursuing a music minor.
I just went from The Faceless (brutal tech metal) to The Mars Volta... |
The Mars Volta I very tolerate them... the other I don't have a clue... great for those careers...

Hi Scott and Matt... glad to see you here Scott... Persephone's Dream last album is bombastic man... have you heard it?
| I've not heard it. I just saw the thread yesterday that they were making it available for reviewing. I have quite a backlog already, but I think I'd like to do that one too. |
Believe me, that album is completely impressive man... I could be wrong, but it might be the best album of 2010... it's everything you want in symphonic prog... but better...!!!

I rather like De-loused, it's quite energetic and entertaining, although I wouldn't call it masterful. That's all I've heard from them though.

Honestly, I can't "enjoy" their music, It put me nervious, you know... I search for peace in the music... even in the metal bands... but TMV doesn't made it for me...
I have to do a review... but I'm already wasting time...

My wife honestly accused me of only "liking" The Mars Volta because people here on PA liked TMV. I was genuinely insulted.
It's true that every sample of TMV I heard was horrible. Yet when I bought a couple of their albums (yes two- it was a promotion and I got one free)- I bought Amp. and FtM- and after listening to them in the car and on my mp3 player while on vacation, I was hooked.
The Mars Volta is the most creative band in the 21st century.

I do think they're definitely one of the most original and inventive bands to come around in the last decade.
Rob, you'd recommend those two albums though? I think I need to expand beyond De-Loused.

For me, music is stimulation... that music gives me something to entertain myself, you know, in my mind and in my "soul" (heart, feelings, whatever) but with TMV all I get is a sense of anxiety, stress and it took away all my internal balance. That's why I can't stand them.
I don't know why but that's how I hear music, that's why many things affect me in a wrong place, I get bored or stressed. But a lot of music stimulate my mind in a good way... Stimulation is everything for me, musical stimulation...
Do I made sense with all that?

Hm, think I might listen to Frances the Mute today, except I get really annoyed that it is mistagged.

| All five TMV albums have the same sound, but consist of very different compositions. The debut is of course, the most consistent. FtM is the most experimental (the first three tracks are amazing). Amp is less consistent than the debut, but includes their best piece, "Tetragrammaton" (as well as some other highlights). TBiG is their worst, but not bad. It is constant frenzied hard-hitting energy from start to finish. Oct is the opposite of this- very quiet, moody music.
All five albums are four-star affairs for me. I recommend them all.
