I grew up listening to both bands, and have a deep love for both. When I was in grade seven, Master Of Puppets and Live After Death were current releases. Still can listen to either band without having become tired of them over so many years.
In a musical sense, I cannot vote for one band over another. They both have mostly excellent releases throughout their lengthy careers, and one or two stinkers (St. Anger, Virtual XI), and all the players are excellent. So I will choose different criteria: I love the *guys* in Maiden, and find the guys in Metallica to be mostly a bunch of egotistic knobs, apart from Jason Newsted and whatever the newest bassist's name is. UP THE IRONS! |

Iron Maiden, easily. They have some of my all-time favorite music. Metallica's great too, and they were one of my first metal bands, but Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and Death Magnetic are their only really fantastic albums IMO. Almost every Iron Maiden album gets 4 or 5 stars from me.

Metallica for me here. I respect Iron Maiden but in my opinion they get boring after a couple of listens and you "outgrow "them ,if you will, and you lose interest as fast as you gained it.
Metallica on the other hand always tried to reinvent themselves by making ballads, interesting riffs etc. But that was before they released St.Anger and the other disappointments.

Iron Maiden by a country mile:) Their music is so melodic compared to Metallica's. Bruce Davidson far outshines Hetfield's very poor vocals. Hetfield's vocals destroy what could be great just as the growling in Opeth turns me off a brilliantly talented group of instumentalists.

Yeah, I went through my teenage years being a huge fan of both, and still am. I guess I could go for Maiden since they have had a serious impact on my life, not just musically. Their albums are quite equal. But how is Kirk an egoistic knob? I guess if one bases his picture of the bandmembers on stuff like Some Kind of Monster (not saying that you do), part of the band may well come across like that, with all the power struggles going on, but from what I've heard they're all very cool and down to earth people around fans and press. Nowadays at least. |

Actually, you're right. I should have pointed out that Kirk isn't an egotistic knob, just a knob. And although I watched and enjoyed Some Kind Of Monster, that documentary came out many years after I had already formed my opinion of those guys. And perhaps as they've aged, they've mellowed, who knows? Either way, it's entirely unimportant what they are like as people. All that really matters is their music, and it is great. It is a nice bonus, though, when they're cool, down-to-earth guys. I'd love to sit and have some pints with the Maiden guys. I'd pass on even meeting the Metallica guys, unless I happened to bump into them on the street - which if I ever do, maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised. |
