What OS do you run?
I've been running different linux distros the last couple of years and am really amazed by how user-friendly they have become and how fast, intuitive and pleasant they are to work with. My recommendation at the moment is Mandriva Linux 2010.1. I think every-one should at least try it.. Very easy to install and set up to dual-boot with Microsoft Windows.

windows 7 64-bit. I preferred windows XP in many ways, and MS DOS in many ways (  ) and also quite like ubunu. I would install ubuntu on any pc I wasn't using for gaming, but unfortunately I AM using this for games

It's a shame the almost all major computer games are made for windows systems. But who needs more games than this
I haven't played computer games since I was a child, I grow tired of them almost immediately. It's more fun to write shell-scripts.
Ubuntu is okay, but far from my favorite distro.

As with any categorial statement of this sort - not true. I haven't been using Windows 7, but I am almost certain that it can't do all the things I do in Linux/Unix systems.

I run windoze. I prefer Linux (Fedora), but this PC is old and doesn't run Fedora-12.

I'd recommend Fedora-12, it's a sweet install (can boot from CD or USB) and the KDE desktop is on a par with Win-7 and OSX. All of the hitting-metal aspects of Linux are still there, but the install makes most of those transparent to the user.

I'm on a machine with Windows 7 right now. I've got another one next to it and my wife's laptop using Windows Vista. At work I'm using XP. When I first started doing work on computers it was straight up DOS. I've been through all the various Windows versions from, uh, 3.1 onwards. I'm pretty much a Windows user by accident because of AutoCAD.
I have zero experience with other operating systems, but I am curious. Anyone out there know how well the alternative operating systems handle software designed for Windows? I'm thinking AutoCAD in particular. But I also have the quaint thing called XPLORA1 Peter Gabriel's Secret World. It worked on W 3.1, but I was never to get it to work again until W Vista.

Linux doesn't handle software designed for Windows. Much software come in both Linux & Windows versions though. But there is tons of free software of almost any sort developed for Linux that is easily available through various software management tools that come with most distributions. You simply search for the software you want, choose, and the software management tool handles the download and installation process. I've been able to find many useful - and often better - alternatives to the software I used to run in Windows.
You can also run a Windows (kind-of) emulator in Linux, called WINE(an abbreviation for Wine Is Not an Emulator) . It creates an artificial windows-environment on your coumputer, so that you can run windows-exclusive software. It doesn't work with everything though.

There is the crux of the problem. If you are dependent on programs that only work with a particular operating system then you are dependent on that operating system. I'm no particular fan of Windows and Microsoftware, they did some good pioneer work but the stuff is way overpriced.

I have an iMac and a Windows Vista. Between those two, I prefer the Mac, although Windows XP was the best computer I ever had. How I miss it.

I am currently running OS X Leopard on my MacBook Pro, and XP on my sh*tty eMachine desktop down in the basement. I badly want to install and run Linux and Windows 7 on my Mac someday soon, however.

Thread has been done before I think, but never mind.
Windows. I used to use Mac in the '80's and early '90's , but I had some communication problems with the outside world and changed to PC. Windows 7 runs well.
