Closure in Moscow (U.S Based Australian band) and a band called Portal from the U.K.

Portal are definitely on my 'prog bands to watch' list as their 2 albums so far have been amazingly refreshing.  Definitely a band that I recommed checking out!

Cotton Sidewalk

They're a rock band from Melbourne, and unfortunately they're still playing in pubs and hotels, despite having a massive sound. Adam Price's vocals are loud, characteristic, and emotional, and his guitarwork is just as good. Within an hour of hearing them I'd bought their latest (2009) album, and after discovering their debut had come off the market, I contacted them about it and they sent it to me free of charge. In a short time they have skyrocketed into not only some of my most played artists (according to last.fm) but also one of my favourite artists.

This is the song that got me, and a friend of mine I showed it to, completely addicted:

I liked the vid quite a bit. Not very Prog musically but that isn't a bad thing.

I'm pregnant. But besides that...

Pixies! I knew about some of their songs before (Where is My Mind, Debaser, etc.) but this year I've really gotten into their music. Doolittle is already a favorite for the car.

Heres a belated discovery I happened to stumble across "Black Noise"by F.M. That album just grabbed hold and pulled me in, don't know why it just did!
I still play it often and enjoy the whole thing, I first thought it was from the early 80's and then found out it was from 1976. To me it seems ahead of its time. A bit cheesy in places but on the whole really good. Pity the sound quality of wasn't better though...
And the changes of no consequence will pick up the reins from nowhere...

I thought this was general music lounge for a moment, my mistake. Embarrassed But I stick by my words, they're the best band I've found this year. Clap

As for prog specifically, I'd have to choose either Eloy or Spock's Beard as this year's best additions to my collection!

This was one of those albums the every Canadian had to own "back in the day". I discovered Nash the Slash "Children of the Night" first, then got Black Noise later. Apparently the master tapes for "Black Noise" disappeared, so the 1994 CD re-issue is recorded from vinyl !

Procol Harum!

How have I overlooked them for so long? I saw them open for Jethro Tull last night - they were phenomenal...I'll be checking out everything they've done with great interest...I've been searching for prog that is not afraid of blues/soul influences and here it is!

I've been listening to prog for just OVER a year, so I would say my greatest discovery this year would be King Crimson

How things change. Now it would have to be Kaipa, and it will no doubt change again before the end of the year!

My biggest discovery this year so far has to be Transatlantic. I absolutely love The Whirlwind and am really growing to like Bridge Across Forever.

I guess Alex Machacek's 24 tales is a biggy for me.  Brother Ape's Turbulence is another...  Looking forward to hearing the new Relocator CD.
