To summarise for those just joining us, The Thread So Far:

If you don't know all the lyrics to Safety Dance, you're not a real prog fan.

The thread can drift to cover music in general if that's what the majority want here. It sits better in the general music discussions though in that case.

The problem with threads digressing too far is that they lose focus, with several unrelated debates going on simoultaneously. It is better to start a new thread on a different topic than misappropriate an existing one.

Yes and Genesis are good bands and I like both of them but it must be said that for whatever reason a change/time resistant cult seems to have formed chiefly around them, the members of which only enjoy new prog if it sounds like Yes or Genesis. This to me is absolutely the opposite of prog as it is stagnant.
I accuse those who would not listen to or try music that is receiving acclaim because they "don't like that sort of thing" to be a lilly-livered rascal. I really like Johnny Cash but never would've tried him if I'd stuck to my "I don't like country music" thing. A true prog fan will try ANYTHING. ANYTHING AT ALL. They don't have to like it, but they'll get it and hear it all the way through before deciding.

True?

I don't think it's as complicated as that.If there is in fact anyone who listens to prog to give themselves a feeling of intelligent superiority they've really come at it the wrong way.Surely reading a book, completing a rubix cube or splitting an atom are far better ways to spend your time and are more likely to get the attention you desire. Why try and get it from a man who dresses like a flower and gold cape wearing ice musical keyboard playert?Even if they do it shouldn't bother us i'd rather have a poser listening to prog than a poser listening to your every day chart sh*t.

Even thinking about Yes and Genesis being played posers makes me happy.

So why is that such a horrble thing that a moderator has to come barging in to steer it back to the straight and narrow????

For all the talk on this site about how Prog is this musical haven for intelligent and creative people, you sure do have a very backward way of administering this site. Censorship, admonishing posters, now the members can't even be trusted to have the intelligence to have a discussion encompassing. . . gulp . . . .  unrelated debates . . . the horror, whatever are we to do???? Wait, I know, let's call in a moderator and force this discussion back into the same old same old prog circle jerk.

Where's Country Joe's Fish Cheer when you need it. Not that you could actually read it here . . . .

And what is this all about:

IS it now???   Why is it exactly????

Good thing prog bands don’t hold to that idea, otherwise whole sections of Close To The Edge or Supper’s Ready would have been wiped out and made into their own little song.

misappropriate???  A conversation runs it's course, that is the beauty of a real conversation regardless of its starting point. Forcing each and every tangential idea into their own individual little thread, doesn’t surprise me at a site where every band it seems has its own sub-sub-genre, neo-this and post-that andsub-whatever. No wonder the general public hates prog; with proponents like this who needs enemies?

Thanks for the support Pangaea, what do I know anyway? Not sure what I did to you to incur such an attack, but you've made it quite clear to me that I should give up moderating immediately. Thanks pal, it's posts like your which make it all worthwhile.

OK, so not content to just send me the PM you go crying to everybody about how I hurt your feelings by questioning the wisdom of forcing people to discuss things only in an officially approved manner. That hardly constitutes an attack.

It would have been better had you just answered the legitimate points I raised, rather than quit being a moderator over such a silly issue.

To answer your question: You didn't INCUR anything, certainly no personal attack. I simply cannot understand how a BB dedicated to Progressive music can be so un-progressive and rigid in their discussion forums.

Nothing personal, it's a fairly legitimate point I think.

I think you DID attack him and he answered you in the Forum because you attacked him here.

As for him quitting over this........don't you get sarcasm?

EL is a person like you not some faceless dictator!

I didn't attack HIM. I made a pointed remark or two regarding an issue that should raise questions. Just as others make pointed remarks in other discussions regarding musical issues, they use the quote feature and respond regarding what the other has posted. This guy just happens to be a moderator. So, what, we can't question a moderator? Where would Prog be if it never questioned the staus quo?

And just to set the record straight, he PM'd me, and then he went and made a post here. The PM would have been sufficient.

Thanks for the support SD. We'll resolve by PM rather than being a further distraction here.

Not really that on topic but related to what VB said, I too became disenchanted with writing reviews. I still do it here occasionally but I used to (before I ever came to PA) be a real review machine, doing about one a day, sometimes more. It's true that I had (alas unfulfilled) aspirations to actually be a music journalist one day but I think I would've done it anyway because I enjoyed it. Now I still chatter online but I'm not so invested in writing my own full reviews anymore.

I've stopped writing reviews for the most part as well.  Mainly because it takes time, which I usually prefer to use in other ways.  Much like the reason I don't spend time listening to thing I don't like on the off chance I'll "grow" to like it.  Waste of time and not a pleasant way to spend it.

(see how I singlehandedly brought us back on topic?  Wink )
