"Romantic Warriors" - a forthcoming prog rock film

“Romantic Warriors. A Progressive Saga” is the title of a forthcoming documentary about the progressive rock genre, directed and produced by

Adele Schmidt and José Zegarra, through Zeitgeist Media LLC. Adele is an experienced documentary maker, who has been awarded for her previous work; José, on the other hand, is a prog record collector and reviewer, and also owns a Spanish-language prog blog called Autopoietican.

It’s only an anticipatory trailer, but it already is quite lovely, as you will see.  

What this trailer shows is the documentary’s approach to the world of prog rock, not restricted to a celebration of the glorious age of the 70s, but mainly focusing on the many ways that this rock genre is managing to survive in the music business, still brewing good bands and albums, still catching the attention of log-time loyal fans and new ones, still finding a place in the market.

Among the many people interviewed in this forthcoming documentary are: Gary Green (the Gentle Giant guitarist), less celebrated but equally talented veterans such as the musicians of The Muffins and Cheer-Accident, new prog veterans such as Roine Stolt, Fabio Zuffanti, D.F.A. and the Cabezas de Cera guys, and also new coming leaders of the prog movement such as Phideaux and Deluge Grander. All of them talk about how they create their material, how they see the current state of the music industry, explaining their ideas on music, art and integrity, also doing the old task of attempting to define and describe “what prog rock is”, etc.  All this and more is delivered in an environment of camaraderie that includes music publishers and audience members at the NEARfest and Prog Day events. Last but not least, there will be images of some bands rehearsing and recording material in various studios.
 

By now, 80% of the footage and the aforementioned fundraising trailer of 10 Min. have been cut. According to Adele and José, “the next step is to film the last few interviews, complete a rough cut by January 2010 and a fine cut of 70 minutes by May 2010.” Their plan is to release the DVD in early summer of 2010, so the film can be submitted to national and international film festival circuits.

This is where we, avid prog rock lovers, can step in… 

So far the film has been self-financed by the filmmakers. In order to advance the film to the next level (rough cut), Adela and José are trying to raise $3000 by the end of January 2010. Every amount is welcomed.

According to the trailer’s website:

 If your gift is $50 or more, you will get a promo code with a 50% discount that can be used towards the purchase of the DVD.

If you give a gift larger than $100 your name will also appear in the “Thank you” section of the end credits.

If your gift is $1,000 or more, your name/organization will be mentioned in the front credits of the film.

In the aforesaid website, there is a PayPal link through which gifts and supports can be sent to the filmmakers.

This is good news for prog rock in the area of cinematography, and well… we can be part of it, too.
