The connection speed is also dependant on how far you are from the exchange. Are you using the main connection in your house (ie the main input where the phone line comes in?) Are you using BT approved cable? If you've got a test socket on your main connection box, try plugging your PC straight into the test socket........some Sky users reported an increase of 400 - 500% by changing the main socket for one that uses filters in the actual socket, rather than using filters on every connection point.
 
If you DO change ISPs, I wouldnt reccomend Sky, under ANY circumstances.
 
Heh....just done a distance test on my own PC.
 
ATM, I can get 4MB, max, but if my house was 10 feet nearer to the exchange, I could get 8MB.

Regards Virgin, NTL laid cables in our area about ten years ago. I believe Virgin took over that network, when NTL fell apart, so the cable network is available to me.

Use the Perform Quick Scan option.


It detected over 600 errors! It was able to fix 110 of them. If I want it to fix the rest, I have to buy the package. I'll see how much it is.

I'll see if what it has done makes any difference first.
 
Sounds like it may have put 600 errors on there, before detecting them. It's not the first time that's happened.
 
If you use Windows, download Microsoft Security Essentials. It's totally free and keeps your PC clean of Spyware, Malware, Adware, Viruses.
 
Or Spybot - Search and Destroy does a similar job and Immunizes your browser from downloading dodgy stuff.....Trojans, etc.

I've been caught a thousand times, like this.

ps : AVG was compromised last year by hackers......this led to a virus being sent out as part of the detection routines that AVG uses, so it went undetected for 6 months. Personally, I don't have a lot of faith in programs that come from Eastern Europe.

Microsoft Security Essentials is an excelent bit of kit..that was good advice....does it run with XP though?

Yep....I run XP, service Pack 3.
 
(Don't like Vista or Windows 7....none of my music software is compatible  Unhappy ).

I'm running XP (Service Pack 3) so yes, MSE should be fine on my system. I currently downloading it. It's taking bloody ages. Seems stuck at 821KB of 7MB! Estimated time to download 1.2 hours. I'm guessing this is down to my slow download speed.

Should I stop the download, re-boot and start again?

No, the installation has completed successfully. I did re-boot.

Next possible problem: It's currently downloading the latest updates, which is taking forever. The progress bar moves very slowly. My internet will not stay connected for long enough for the updates to download. It doesn't appear to resume where it left off, when you re-store the connection either. It's making reasonable progress on this run.

For MSE to work properly other anti-virus programs need to be removed, so I'm removed my Norton software, and cancelled my subscription. If these updates continue to fail, I wont be able to run an MSE scan, or schedule a scan. My computer is therefore at risk until I can. If this fails to work I'll have to un-install it, install something else in the meantime like Avira, and then get on to BT to increase my download speed, or change ISP of course.

It seems the connection has greater 'staying power' if I'm simultaneously using the internet, while the download is taking place, but I can see absolutely no reason at all why that should be the case!

I do have a router. It may well be the problem. Loss of connection is restored when I turn it of and on again, so yes logical, in light of the download speed check I done the other day which indicated 1.7m, out of a possible 2, which with the max as 2, is perhaps not bad, as Ian suggested. If MSE doesn't pick up on any problems, then it will be time to get on to the ISP.

Is it possible the fault may be with my network port on the computer, or something silly like a damaged connection in the ethernet cable? That would be the first inexpensive thing to try I guess.

have you tried unplugging your modem and router for five minutes and then plugging them in again?

Have you cleared all internet temp files?
