Half Life 2 is f*cking brilliant. The presentation, the ambiance, the story, even the unconventional shooting mechanics.
What don't you get about it?
What unconventional shooting mechanics? Gravity gun is cool but it doesn't carry the game. The graphics are awesome (and I'll admit a decent chunk of the game was lost on me because my sh*tty video card couldn't render very far, like the landscape underneath that bridge). Basically, driving a go cart is boring, driving a hovercraft down endless f**king canals is boring, killing headcrabs is just as boring as the first million times I did it in HL1, killing poison headcrabs and fast zombies is just annoying (Ravenholm is one of the worst FPS levels I've ever played), shooting that bitchy little pistol at Combine is boring (and then they just go down like THAT), f**king 8 million physics puzzles is boring, not knowing what the f**k is going on is boring, etc. etc. I got stuck somewhere after the gravity gun and antlions trying to kill helicopters or turrets or something and at some point I never bothered to pick it up again. I haven't played it in a long time so I'm sure there's more but whatever.

It doesn't play or feel like a traditional shooter is what I was getting at.
Ravenholm was tough and kind of annoying, but hardly much more so than almost all video games can get.
Even if the levels stretched out a little long I enjoyed the vehicle levels, if for the very least because they were pretty dynamic open world levels.
I for one never got bored of capping Combine soldiers with my pistol and hearing the eerie, stifled screams blotted out by the sound of their vitals going dead, along with the creepy muted police chatter made an awesome ambiance.
I knew what the f*ck was going on, even if it took a while.
