I want something that will take a long to get into, but is really rewarding after many listens.

Any suggestions? Anything prog will do.

Try me. I've heard metal that makes you want to stab a kitten.

Yeah, anything's game, man.

Well, first I'd recommend Between the Buried and Me's newest album, The Great Misdirect.  I'm someone who really, really doesn't like metalcore and I was a little hesitant buying this album.  It really didn't grab me until about the third listen, and it really is quite excellent and very inventive.

One band that goes horribly unnoticed on this site is the Swedish post-metal band Cult of Luna.  Their second most recent album Somewhere Along the Highway I would consider to be in my top 5 metal albums of all time.  It took a few listens, but it really is a masterpiece of sonic chaos and incredible atmosphere.  You should also look up the story behind the recording process as it's quite fascinating to see how they went about making such a unique atmosphere in that album.  I'd also recommend their newest album Eternal Kingdom, which isn't as dense or quite as good as Somewhere Along the Highway, but it does have some excellent moments and a very dark, yet intriguing concept.

Also, are you familiar with any Gojira?

Thanks for the suggestions, and yeah, I've heard of Gojira but never a full album.

Well, you absolutely have to check out their album From Mars to Sirius.  I think I was telling Ben before that that album singlehandedly got me into extreme metal, and without that album, I'd still be afraid of Opeth.

It's amazing.  Check it out, and if you like it, check out their newest, The Way of All Flesh.
