For me, by far the best release of the year so far is "X" by Spock's Beard.
It is truly excellent, a massive achievement for the non-Neal Morse line-up. |

SBX is a masterpiece, if you're into metal (or prog-related) I'd also susggest Iron Maiden's upcoming album, the singles seem promising. For upcoming albums I suggest ____'s 2010 album
Symphony X Seventh Wonder Glass Hammer (hopefully) and Star One Edited by SolarLuna96 - August 08 2010 at 21:57 |

Well.... maybe i´m being a bit unoriginal, but for me the musical peak of 2010 has been Haken´s "Aquarius" (since it just sounds absolutely amazing, brilliant and new, reminding me of the feeling i got after listening to The Deer Hunter´s "Act III: Life and Death" of 2009...)
I´d also recommend Karnataka´s "The Gathering Light", Disperse´s "Journey Through the Hidden Gardens" and Spock´s Beard´s "X". In case you´re not so much into neo-prog or metal, Jaga Jazzist "One-Armed Bandit" and Pat Metheny´s "Orchestrion" would be a good choice. And for the visual experience PT´s "Anesthesize" will probably be a safe bet. Waiting to see it myself . |

If you are into some edgier stuff, I can recommend you two excellent albums released by one of the best independent labels around, MoonJune Records:
Iron Kim Style - s/t Dennis Rea - Views from Chicheng Precipice Guitarist Dennis Rea (whom I consider a good friend of mine) is behind both projects, and is also the mastermind of Seattle-based band Moraine (another heartily recommended act). |

I enjoyed Iron Kim Style a lot, but seems like other reviewer disagree with this point of view. I think that dark pessimistic atmosphere of it is good depiction of situation in North Korea. No list of 2010 is (and will be) complete without Haken's debut. And do you want Technical Metal ? Check Sigh. |

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

I heard murmurings when they started gigging again last year but has this been confirmed now? Also, new Jean Louis? Yippee! Also also, no one has mentioned Jaga Jazzist's latest yet. Except for me just then. |

I strongly recommend Terje Rypdal's new album, Crime Scene. Amazing fusion album with delightful retro-Hammond and crazy brass. Samples from Clint Eastwood, Italian and Scorsese films make it even more colorful. Great stuff.
