I like them all, maybe except Alanis, she's beautiful, but not my type.

All wome are beautiful, each one in their way.

^ I never understood all the fuss about Enya. Good elevator music or hotel lobby background stuff. Gotta be me, I know she is rather successfulSleepy

That Enya really gets on my nerves. LOL

Has no one mentioned Chrissie Hynde? Great singer AND songwriter. Kinda hot, too.

First album was lovely but has admittedly been a law of diminishing returns since. I seem to have acquired a lot of her stuff though over the years.

From the list, maybe PJ Harvey, but Barb Gaskin is still my ultimate favourite female vocalist.
I'd like to mention another special lady with angelic vocals from a band really worth checking: Shanti Curran from Arborea.

ClapOne of my favourites, together with the mighty Siouxsie. I'm much more into contraltos than sopranos (with some notable exceptions). Speaking of which, I'm surprised no one mentioned Lisa Gerrard - one of the best voices I've ever heard, period.

^Or Liz Fraser, to remain in the same era.
Speaking of the 80's, I would like to know more about A.C.Marias: I only have her 1989 album One Of Our Girls (released on Mute) which is another treasure forgotten under the dust of times.
She started her career in 1980, singing on the song "Cruel When Complete" from Dome's first LP (Dome was a band created by two former members of Wire). Her music is rather atmospheric, each instrument resonating in a "full empty space"... Wonderful.

Also, Julie Crusee for her 1990 album Floating Into the Night (including the song you can hear in David Lynch's Blue Velvet).

Thank you for the kind words Ronnie/Max/Jeffrey/Tom. :P
And thank you for the sample, Matt!
Besides possessing an amazing voice, Shanti is not a bad banjo player either. Again, highly recommended.

Yes, for seeing her live, I second the Emmylou recommendation.

All the usual suspects have been cited. Now for the ones that deserve some more attention :

Polish vocalist Agnieszka Dudek (Turquoise, Ankh) has also a lovely voice :

Ukrainian vocalist, Roksana Vikaluk (who is somewhat prog-related, at least in some prog rock websites) can be recommended as well :

Spanish vocalist Patricia Tapia (of AOR band Nexx) is also incredible :

Tracey Blue of the AOR band Life On Mars should not b overlooked (listen to the song "nancy dear") :

Beatriz Pichi Malen of the mapuche tribe :

Reinette l'Oranaise from Algeria :
