Rush are the ONLY seventies prog band still making decent albums.

Nah, you're quite right, Moving Piccys is fantastic but would you rather listen to the above or...
Face it. As much as you might (and indeed I might) hate to admit it, they are past their best

The Fish Geek story might need it's own thread
BTW every vote on this poll that says they're not sure about Rush is a vote for Bush. Don't let him have another four more years...

Hi sigod
Yes. They are past their best. I'm not disputing that for a minute. Question was, are they overated??
IMO. NO Their fans - like myself - may 'overate' them, but then again so do fans of Yes and ELP etc. The media, as with with all rock acts of a certain age, ridicule them.
Give me Moving Pictures any day. Roll the bones is not bad. (8/10)

Yes, I misunderstood Blacksword, sorry about that guv.
In that light I don't think that they're overrated (not any more than the big three, Yes, Genesis and The Jackson 5). It is notable however that Rush recently sold out an arena tour or the UK. Not many prog bands can still do that.

Indeed they did. Good shows they were too, if a bit loud They are certainly the only prog band whose amps go up to 11.
I reckon if Genesis reformed (properly with Gabriel & Hackett) they could do some huge shows.
As for the Jackson 5, well frankly I'm disgusted that the archives ignore them. Great prog heroes!

Arguably Rush were a bit overrated in the seventies (up to Hemispheres) getting caught between 2 stools (prog and metal). But then they really found their niche on albums like Moving Pictures.I also think their nineties albums are worthwhile although many question their prog credentials. My favourite Rush album is the live set 'Different Stages'.I can't think of any band now that packs such a punch in a live arena.

If you listen to the 90's albums there is some really thoughtful stuff to enjoy.Obviously they do not carry the same punch as they did 20 yrs ago but then who does? They are not the type of band who "go through the motions" and their music has continued to evolve, but evolving away from prog rock.Maybe they should have their own niche -"tech-rock" or something similar. They are not prog rock any more and probably havent been prog rock apart from COS-AFTK.
It is reaaly insulting,I think, to judge Rush by the standards of others. They are unique and certainly do not intend to merely reproduce their most popular albums for the gratification of non-committed fans.
Tell me, what have Yes,Genesis, Elp or King Crimson been doing of note whilst Rush have been releasing their last half a dozen albums? Which crowds have The Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree, Marillion or the Mars Volta been wowing? Could Dream theater fill the concert halls of Europe and the Americas? What oportunities have Rush had that were denied Anglagard, Echolyn, Fish or Steve Hackett?
Pray tell!
Every person has the right to dislike Rush, that's a matter of taste but I find it amazing that on a Prog Rock forum of all places, people are actually debating if Rush are overrated!
I remember Charles Shaar Murray of the NME once replying to a letter in that "esteemed" rag in the late seventies:"dont worry (John?) just think of all the people out there who cant tell the difference between Rush and sh*t!" Join the club.

Hey, Bush is out there still putting out albums. Where are all the other presidents eh? Carter, Nixon, Regan have all just dropped off the face of the earth?
Bush still sells out arenas all over the world. Everybody is entitled to their opinion but as that esteemed rag 'The New York Post' put it 'People have to remember the difference between Bush and sh*t'
