I do like Mastodon not so familiar with BTB&M
I've been on an Opeth binge myself....and I think it works for them very well! I'll mess around, see if: 1- I can do it 2- Can make it fit with the music oh and if I can not ruin my voice
| I bought The Great Misdirect on a good price at Best Buy last year...I was just curious if I could stomach them.
Forget stomaching them...I think their album is excellent! Granted, I don't play it as often because it is not my thing, but I'll be damned if I wasn't impressed.

See, I love melody and interesting chord progressions more than anything. That latter album is loaded with both.

My school newspaper had a "Music Recommendations" thread, and one guy suggested Mastodon, saying Crack the Skye was his favorite album.

Which is exactly why you need to get Colors eventually. It's my favorite album of all time and even better than TGM. Their live DVD is quite good too. But as for you, JJ, you absolutely need to hear them. The two Robert and I mentioned are really good, and Alaska is really good too once you give it a few listens.

OK. I pretty much go against ALL opinion of this site.. But I like their older metal stuff. Their newer "proggy" stuff I just could not get into, despite many tries over time. Maybe I will again sometime

My university magazine did a gig review of Meshuggah once, I lol'd hard because the reviewer was obviously an indie-pop-pitchfork poser.

Hate to break it to you, but Leviathan is much better than CtS or Blood Mountain IMO. It's not quite as melodic, but I find 1) the instrumental breaks more interesting, 2) it sounds more original to my ears, and 3) it's a concept about Moby Dick dammit.

Did they happen to pick Chaosphere for their review?

Man, how am I missing this metal conversation?
Mastodon is my all-time favorite band. While I think Blood Mountain is my favorite album, Crack the Skye is probably their best, although that's closely followed by Remission, which is just an absolutely killer metal album.
Metalsucks.net named Leviathan as the best metal album of the decade.
Mastodon has probably my favorite growled vocals in metal.

Speaking of metal, my next album has some "metal-like" excursions. I'm really stepping out of my comfort zone some here.
Now not the EP...the EP is traditional symphonic rock with a lot of light passages.
I hope I don't disappoint anyone, but I think I will doing quite a bit of that!

As long as it's good I don't mind. I do not listen to much symphonic anymore though.
