This has been a month full of insane work for me; now it’s time for a game.

So I give to you “Gladiators.”

This is a simple game based on a simple system I made up a couple of years ago.  It is based on dice with more than six-sides, yes, but is a quick and easy game for anyone who wishes to play.

The premise is also simple: You buy and sell warrior slaves who compete in gladiator-style competition for gold and fame.  There is little to do on your part but make transactions and issue challenges.  I take care of the actual matches.

Each warrior slave has these attributes:

A (Attack) – A modifier to the 1d20 attack roll
D (Defense) – A modifier to the 1d20 defense roll
C (Constitution) – Amount of a damage that can be sustained.
WP (Weapon Proficiency) – A bonus to using a particular weapon. This is combined with the Attack bonus if that particular weapon is used. These are designated by the first letter of each of the five weapon classes.
Value – This is how much a warrior slave initially costs.

In combat, if an attack roll is higher than the defense roll (plus modifiers), this is a hit, and the defender incurs damage (according to the weapon used).

A critical hit (natural 20) occurs if a 20 is rolled while attacking, no matter what.  This causes immediate double damage.  A critical defense (natural 20) occurs if a 20 is rolled on defense, no matter what.  This causes an immediate (and free) counterattack.

Once a warrior reaches 0, he is out and the match is over.  If a warrior falls below -3, he is dead and lost forever.

_____

Anyone can play, and each username is given 30 gold as seed money.  To participate, all you must do is post with the following information:

-Warrior(s) you are purchasing
-Equipment you are purchasing
-Your remaining gold

At that point, I will add you to the roster.

At any time, you may issue a challenge to another participating Master (username).  Just word it this way:
When you challenge a person, I want to see this:

I challenge: (NAME OF MASTER)

I am using (NAME OF GLADIATOR + EQUIPMENT)

The arena will be (ARENA)

You may even state any stipulations of combat if you wish (specify the slaves to fight, specify what weapons will be used, etc.)  You may even specify the terms of victory- spoils can include any amount of gold in play, weapons, or living slaves.  The terms are up to the challenger.*

*If your terms are ridiculous (as in implausible with the mechanics of the game), I will say so, laugh at you, and not allow the match.

If someone has issued a challenge to you, respond this way: “I accept (or decline) USERNAME’s challenge.”  Terms can be negotiated, however.  Once the parties agree, the fight can happen as soon as I am available to roll for it and narrate it.

There is no story.  There are no choices to be made.  You are a gladiator buyer / trainer / seller, not the gladiators themselves.  You do not control your warriors.  Once a challenge has been made and accepted, I take over, making the attack and defense rolls (the challenger goes first), and I will post a summary of the fight, and announce the victor.

Upon winning, the victor gets the spoils from the agreed upon wager (if any), as well as a purse from the arena (equal to 10 gold).

The loser gets nothing.  If your gladiator perishes (not always the case in a loss), he is out for good.  You must buy a new slave or use another one in your possession.

Both combatants (if the loser survives) do get one training point, however.  This may be used to either boost the Attack or Defense attribute by one point, or add 3 points to the Constitution.

Special fights against champions will also become available.  Winning these treacherous matches yields huge purses, titles, and serious bragging rights.  Beware- they are belligerent and very powerful.

You may sell slaves and weapons to other players, but the prices are completely up to you and the potential buyer- negotiate them all you want.  You may not sell warriors or weapons back to me.  Once you buy them, they are yours to deal with.

I will make updates to rosters on this page.

Finally, if you are out of resources and cannot compete but still wish to participate, you may make deals with other masters who can issue you a loan based on fixed, agreed upon terms (for example, “I will lend you 20 gold but you must repay me 25).  This is solely a risk on the part of the investor.

I will update these rules as needed.

Arenas

Arenas are the setting for the fight.  There are currently five arenas, each with special situations.

Proclamation

This is the standard and default arena of all one-on-one matches.  The winner takes home 10 gold.

In the Cage

This is a gruesome cage match.  Two special rules apply here.  First, if a wounded gladiator is forced against the cage (30% chance of this happening per successful hit), he is subjected to another free hit by his opponent.  This may continue as long as the 30% rule applies (when it doesn't, the wounded warrior has escaped).  The second is more brutal: If a warrior loses the match but does not die, the victor will have the option of executing his foe.  The winner takes 15 gold.

The Gates of Delirium

The Gates of Delirium are reserved for prestigious one-on-three battles.  This arena was conceived by certain freed gladiators who always hated how their amazing skill and constitution made most masters of lesser warriors too afraid to challenge them.  One warrior may issue a challenge to a specific three gladiators, or three gladiators may issue a challenge to the one warrior.  After a challenge is accepted, the battle occurs.  If the one wins, he pockets 33 gold, whereas if the three win (regardless of deaths), the masters each take home an 11 gold purse.

The Pinnacle

The Pinnacle is a 300 foot structure with an open square plane at the top for battle.  There is always a 20% chance that upon a successful hit, you send your opponent flying off the arena and to certain death.  The victor of this match wins 24 gold.

Octavarium

Octavarium is the setting for scheduled epic fights.  All one must do to sign up to an Octavarium battle is say so, posting a gladiator of choice and the exact equipment being used.  After eight gladiators have been volunteered, and the Emperor (that's me) is available for such a massive match, it will commence- every man for himself.  Make note: Once you have committed your gladiator to the Octavarium, there is no withdrawal!  Each player will be given specific odds for gambling purposes.  The victor of the Octavarium takes home an astounding 80 gold.

Gladiators for the Octavarium:

1. Mei (jampa17)
2. Rubycon (CinemaZebra)
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Never thought people on a progressive rock site would be afraid of reading what amounts to a 2-page rulebook.  Ermm

Yes.

But once you buy, it's yours to sell at whatever price you can fetch for it from other players.  You can't sell it back to me.

As a kid I got used to tossing the rulebook aside and just attacking it. To this day I never read manuals/instructions anything...almost instinctively.

and I would hope that a fighter's skills - or their A and D numbers - would increase with victories and/or experience, otherwise there's not much tactical incentive, just gambling

All right, the stuff is up.

If you want to play, follow the instructions.  Post with this information.  You get 30 gold to begin with.

-Warrior(s) you are purchasing
-Equipment you are purchasing
-Your remaining gold

This is just for fun.

I promise I'll be fair (notice I'm not actually playing myself).

And bear with me as the rules and stuff will probably change as a need arises.  Smile

Go buy your men and arms!  Angry
