Thomas Jefferson made his own Bible, taking from it anything he didn't agree with (Wow..Isn't this arrogant?) because according to him (without any support) "The Evangelists invented all"
George Bernard Shaw was a well known atheist
So even when I won't say anything about them...I don't have to believe a word they say about religion.
And BTW: The Book of Revelations is in the NEW Testament Mike. As a fact is the newest of the Bible

Send Mike to Bible study. By the way that is probably the most interesting book for me. Psst, Iván, there's no "s", it's The Book of Revelation. I should also add that it's my understanding that Jefferson's rewrite was just to remove anything regarding Jesus' divinity rather than just being a human.
Which leads into the question, why does anything exist at all anyway? This has convinced me that we all don't exist and none of this is actually happening. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 29 2010 at 12:49 |

maybye I should start a Darwin thread. But I'm afraid that Mr, Progfreak and myself would just find ourselves agreeing with each other too much.

LOL, agai language problems, in Spanish it is called "Libro de las Revelaciones" in plural, so I thought it was the same in English.
Thanks

That's interesting. It's plural in Spanish and not in English. Happen to have any idea whether or not it's plural in the original Greek? |

Of course not. But when there are irreconcilable contradictions on major issues, and the whole collection of books is supposed to represent the knowledge of the creator of the universe ... it makes me wonder whether it's really just a collection of stories. |

I don't think this is an arrogant thing to do. You know perfectly well that what we today know as the Bible is the result of a process that took centuries ... there were many factions, and many more gospels, revelations, apocalypses, letters, acts etc. suggested for inclusion. In the end one of the factions won and is today remember as the orthodox one, while the others are remembered as heretics. I don't see why this particular version is to be seen as the ultimate result of this process, when we today know so much more about morality (homosexuality, slavery, racism etc.). You're always preaching political correctness, how about removing some of the more abject verses?
Indeed it is ... I stand corrected. |

The Bible is just a story book. Jesus Christ was a composite. Even my dear old dad who was a religious man agreed with this point. What I really hate about religious fanatics is that they use it as a bloody facade.

From the moment he censors any trace of divinity, he's turning Jesus in just a man and he claimed (if I'm not wrong) that Jesus wasn't divine).
I'm not sure if he was an Atheist or some sort of Agnostic materialist (I believe not even he knew), his cocept of a material divinity is really contradictory.
So yes, he believed Jesius was just a human.

In fact many Christians believed that in the decades and centuries after his death - the many factions that I mentioned above had very different opinions on *what* Jesus actually was. And even in the finalized collection the issue remains contradictory (e.g. compare the gospel of John to the three other gospels). |

Yes I agree with thre firts verse as a one unique revelation, but believe me, it's known as Libro de las Revelaciones:
Surely it's not the exact translation, but as you said on another thread, the variations of a term doesn't make it wrong (Believe it was about AOR meaning Adult or Album). And I studied even at School as Libro de las Revelaciones de San Juan.

^ I'm not doubting you Iván - the book is frequently called the Book of Revelations in English too, though in English this is erroneous. I also notice that the alternative title in Spanish is Apocalipsis which (from google) appears to be singular and plural.
