Definitely a book; it leaves the imagination free. I have cried many times when reading a book; this rarely happens to me in a movie (though it has happened to me, of all movies, in the old "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" by Walt Disney).

Music.
Music both augments and explains my emotions and thoughts more than anything else. I hesitated on movies for a second, but thinking about it, how many movies would go from excellent to neutered if the score was taken away? Music wins.

It's not that strange. Snow White was one of the best Disney movies ever. The first they made at Disney, and it has some touching moments for sure. It was still all very fresh, new and exciting in those days, back then.

Interesting observation. I'm sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey would be a lot less powerful without "Also Sprach Zarathustra," "The Blue Danube," and "Requiem." Still, since I would say that many times music is a necessary component of a movie instead of just an add-on, I still go with movies.

I mainly watch comedies so I don't really watch heart-wrenching movies

Watch Grave of the Fireflies and be prepared to cry like a baby. Saddest movie I've ever seen.

Definitely a book. No album has ever made me cry, but every single Victor Hugo novel has.

Music then books and movies a few times.

I had the best time of my life affectevly when I watche Lawrence of Arabia, many a-ha moments occured while i watched it (so it is here Spielberg, Coppola, Scorcese and Lukas have learnd their trick).

All three.
Only a few instances of any of them have ever made me cry, though. I admit, being moved to tears via art is...ethereal for me.
Sling Blade and Grave of the Fireflies do it, for films.
Flowers for Algernon did it for literature
And Tom Wait's Small Change did it.

Am I terrible because that didn't make me cry, but I did "sexy cry" over Toy Story 3? It did have a very profound effect on me, though, more so than almost any other film.

There is some music which can make me cry too, like for example the fourth movement of Mahler's ninth symphony. And Bach makes me cry for sheer beauty. But nothing compares to some tears I shed when reading books. When I read how little Nell died in Dicken's "The Old Curiosity Shop", for example - I wept like a waterfall then.

though I listen to much more music and watch much more movies, a good book is still the most affecting medium for me
