I thought I would put the LOTR movies separate to make it more interesting.

I just saw Avatar recently, and I agree with many out there: amazing special effects, lame story.

I vote for the Return Of The King.

The basics of the avatar plot is a cheap ripoff of Pocahontas.

I vote for The Two Towers.

You can not campare a literrary masterpiece with a amalgam of rip-off and nice graphix, nor can you comare the most influncial fantasy work with a semi combo sci-fi, fantasy and action movie (and one more minus is that they killed of Michelle Rodriguez role, you can't do that, she is hot and to kill here of made me angry )

I think Hellboy and the Golden army was a better film then Avatar, also Watchmen the movie beats Avatar for mee (you only need one Blue guy)

i voted for a Fellowship of the Rings

but I like Avatar it is a great film but not compareable to Lord of the Rings, nor Hobbit

Actually they are comparable, since both Avatar and LOTR were enormously successful and both were Fantasy/ Sci Fi. In fact, these two movies have changed film making as we knew it when they were released.

Well, I never thought I could see this poll coming. Of course Avatar... is a bunch of cr*p besides any of the TLOR movies. I think the only comparable thing between them was the money they expend on the films.

Two Towers, is the most solid Cinematographic film of the three. But I could choose the other two even if my life depends on it, way over Avatar...

I thought LOTR was the biggest waste of time I've ever subjected myself to. Avatar was a pretty average movie too, but at least it looked cool.

I feel the same way with LOTR except its been going on longer. People act like it's some deep pseudo-intellectual story. It seems like the same rehashed fantasy garbage to me...walking through this beautiful crazy landscape and getting attacked by dwarves, monsters, and the like. I don't understand what the fuss is about. If quality is measured by amount of walking watched then maybe this movie IS that great.

Then reading about people talking about movies on a progressive rock site doesn't seem like something you should be doing. What the hell do you expect people to talk about in a topic about movies if it isn't discussing movies?

I thought Avatar, especially in the dialogue department (never a strong element of Cameron's movies), risible. I wasn't expecting much after all the hype of Titanic and then seeing that shipwreck of a film.

I used to love the Lord of the Rings novels and read them over and over as a teen, and am reading The Hobbit to my children now, but didn't like the movies. A much better version for me is Bakshi's rotoscope film. That captured the magic of the books much better for me. I didn't like the Hollywood-type alterations to the story in Jackson's version either. It's rare that a film can match a book for me, though. Fahrenheit 451 (Truffaut's adaptation) is one exception to the rule, though others dismiss it.

I loved heavenly Creatures when it came out, so I was expecting a little more from Jackson. Heck, I'll take Bad Taste and Braindead over his LotR. At least they were fun.

Funnily enough, I rarely discuss film here, but I know much more about film than music as I have a minor in film studies and haven't even studied music theory (I think that's one reason why I'm more interested in discussing music -- there's more for me to learn). I got so bored with film studies eventually.

For me, it's difficult to think of Lord of the Rings as three separate movies (and books), so it's difficult to choose a favourite. But if I have to choose, I'll have to go with The Return of the King. And any of them, or all as one piece, will easily go over Avatar. Perhaps it would have been interesting too to match LotR with Pan's Labyrinth (for that movie treats fantasy in a very interesting way, and somewhat I guess it would have done a bit better against LotR than Avatar).
