All I have to say is that Textbook better not see this.
Why? What kind of higher knowledge does he have? He seems pretty intolerant on religious people but well read.. Maybe he has READ what music is and can understand that, awful as it is, rap IS music...
I have READ about what music is. It's organized sound, presented as music. Of course rap is music. Basically anything you put onto a CD and say "here, music" is music. I listen to a lot of stuff that my friends and relatives don't consider music (drone, noise, musique concret, etc.), so I oughta know!
(and yes, I will threadjack, because I am tired of talking about religion.)

So if I go for a walk whilst talking to a friend, it's music?

If you record it and present it as music or if you sell tickets for an audience to watch you, then yes.

Like serilaism, prog metal or minimalism, rap can be quite fascinating as a sociological study and like serilaism, prog metal or minimalism it is much more interesting to study its sociology than it is to listen to.

i offer to liste to som Outkast before you make a solid judgement, or Tech n9ne, or Twista, or Ludacris, or Nas, or KRS ONE, or even early Kenya West before he got all crazy and self centerd.
also watch some HIP HOP documentaries before you make judgement without any solid fundation of your prejudgement of a genere you seem to ignore or don't know enough of, Rap is not whats on MTV or Americas got Talent, watch the documentary BEEF, to get a little clue about what genere Rap is realy all about.
here is some real rap from the KING of underground rap, hes most crazy deliverence and even some backwords message in the beggining
some hints to what good hip hop/rap is IMO
smooth flow
strong voice
a message (but don't have to be that if the deliverence is good)
strong beats
have to be urban sounding you have to smell the smog of NYC, or LA, or the air in Miami or Atlanta, the asphalt of the street
Ilmanic by Nas delivers all that, you literly smell Queens Bridge, and it got a nice Jazzy flaver.

I used to work in a record store, and believe me, I have heard more of all of those artists than I ever wanted to. I still think it's awful. I don't think any documentaries will change my mind about what music I like.

right T?
Totally right.
These days serialism attracts me more than most prog-metal though. The DT connection comes from the heart.

And I suggest you don't make assumptions. I have heard all of these artists many times, as my uncle whom I live with constantly listens to them. I also used to not mind rap and listen to a few of them. Still, my train of thought remains the same way it is.

On the subject of rappers and theism, what is going on with gangster rappers who espouse violence, murder and crime, then thank Jesus in their sleeve notes?
