Topic: New Genre: Progressive Suck Posted: July 14 2010 at 18:32 |
I suggest that we here at PA create a new and overlooked genre, Progressive Suck. This is for bands who find original and innovative ways to suck, going far beyond the norms of just being boring and inoffensive to create egregiously poor music in ways we never thought possible.
For example, Brokencyde's visionary creation of crunkcore, Limp Bizkit's daring combination of the worst of metal with the worst of rap, or perhaps snap music artists who made some serious hit singles (D4L are a good example) out of some snapped fingers and about 7 vocabulary items.
Thoughts?

The entire genre of crunkcore. Combining incredibly annoying synth techno or rap beats with screaming that sounds like they're trying to take a crap.

Yeah, Crazy Frog are a good example. Take music that sounds like its being made on cellphones and adding silly repetive high speed gibberish vocals, I'd call that progressive suck.
Also witness DJ Sammy's huge hit Heaven. If you thought you already hated Bryan Adams, wait till you hear his euro-disco-dance reimagining.
In fact dance remixes of MOR radio pop in general are a rich vein of progressive suck. The dance mix of My Heart Will Go On for example.
Glee's doing a lot of interesting progressive suck work, combining an irritating TV show with gloopy, saccharine song selection and performance to explore new horizons of crapness.

The whole sub-genre of "auto tune" is really making waves in the progressive suck world. Now, not only is musical talent obsolete, but you can sound like a tone deaf robot as well!

I vote for Kesha for being the only woman to make Autotune sound off-key.

Idon't hate Bryan Adams, when I saw the the Wall concert - with and by Roger Waters I was realy impressed by Bryans rythem guitar skills, realy great sound and he playes realy confident also, and one of the greates voices in the 80s and rock in general, (also RIchard Marx had good voice)

some of these guys are missing the point. In order for someone's suck to be progressive, it needs to be original, fresh, new and innovated. These are musicians that are moving the music business... somewhere, anyway

I might also nominate My Humps by Black Eyed Peas. Musically it doesn't do much new in the way of sucking but lyrically I think it really pushed the envelope for what we had previously thought was possible in terms of suckage. Not since Hanky Panky by Tommy James And The Shondells had we heard such jaw-droppingly-rubbish lyrics. Fergie is one to watch in the area of breaking new ground for lyrics that rewrite our understanding of crapness, as her subsequent hit London Bridge almost gave My Humps a run for its money.
