Recently, I've come across some Iron Maiden stuff on satellite radio and through clips here, and I must say I find them interesting, <ripppppp> (The sound a needle makes when it's dragged across a vinyl record> OK, what really has been happening, is I've become more patient and decided to actually LISTEN to their music, instead of just completely brushing them off with a dismissive "Oh, just another pseudo California 80's hair band wanna be..." wave of my hand, and then a quick change of the dial. So, I've pretty much liked what I've heard, so I could have been wrong about these guys . Anyway, I'd like to start foraging around in their catalog, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm looking for some suggestions on where to start my Iron Maiden journey. Thanks |

As usual depends on where you wanna start old or new? With IM there is a "reunion" time frame when Bruce returned to the band, Fear of the Dark, last album with Bruce before he left. Brave New World marked the return album for Bruce.
Old: Powerslave, Piece Of Mind and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
New: Brave New World, A Matter of Life and Death
There will be many more suggestions from the good folks here on the PA.....soak it all in and enjoy!!
Up the Friggin Irons!!!!

Iron Maiden is one of my favorite heavy metal bands, and are miles and miles ahead of these "pseudo California 80's hair band wanna bes" you speak of.
I would recommend starting with Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Somewhere In Time, Powerslave, and A Matter of Life and Death if you're looking from a progressive standpoint. All of these albums I can confidently call progressive heavy metal, even though no one ever agrees with me. If you're looking for pure heavy metal, Killers and The Number of The Beast are essential as well. |

I go with these mentioned already, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Somwhere in Time, Powerslave, Piece of Mind, Number of The Beast, all of those records features Bruce Dickinson on vocals, who is the best maiden vocalist for me! But still, I also love two first albums: Iron Maiden and Killers, (vocals: Paul Di'Anno). Here's one song of my choice from each of the albums I mentioned in chronological order starting from the first record:
Phantom of the Opera
Killers
Children of the Damned
Where Eagles Dare
Rime of the Ancient Mariner ("the long one")
Caught Somwhere in Time
Infinite Dreams (My all time favorite!)
I hope you find these links helpful in some way!
Up the Irons! Sonisphere Finland here I come!

I agree 100% with Jeff as well.
But you might also wanna check the album that made them the gods of metal, the Number Of The Beast. A classic masterpiece.

Powerslave
Seventh Son of a seventh son Somewhere in time Piece of Mind Personally, my favourite album is Number of the Beast, but that's more for sentimental reasons. It's a great NWOBHM album, with little to no prog metal credentials. |

First of all, stop calling them Iron Maiden, and just call them Maiden. It makes you sound like a fan. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a wonderful prog metal record, released in 1988, my #1 prog metal album from the 80s. You definitely want to listen to it. I'm the biggest prog metal fan so you better believe me. There are some cute chicks, I believe, on the Live After Death DVD. It's really cool to watch and dance to the concert. |

My personal favorite Maiden albums are Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and Brave New World. Powerslave, Number of the Beast, Dance of Death, and Piece of Mind are also very good and worth checking out.
