I'm going to be weird and vote for The Trouble with Harry.
I was interested to see someone vote for that one, it must be the most un-Hitchcock like film he made. I voted for "North by Northwest", which I think is gripping from start to finish.
A couple of things to note with NBNW. The actress playing Cary Grant's mother was actually only a few years older than he was. Also, in the scene in the cafe at Mount Rushmore near the end, watch for the small boy who covers his ears just before the shot is fired. Also, the film title is not a compass bearing, it's a reference to an airline.

Hey, Easy! If I remember correctly, you were the originator of the previous Hitch topic. Since you're obviously an enthusiast, could you answer me this?
In your opinion, which Hitch film is the most under-appreciated, and which film is always given too much credit?
Just curious. I have a long way to go before I can say I've seen all of them, so any opinions like this one may help me decide which films to put on the back burner and which ones to pursue sooner.

I once attended a conference where a famous art historian analyzed Vertigo from the perspective of Pygmalion's myth. Since then I find this film mindblowing, a major masterpieces. I enjoyed all the other Hitchcock films I saw, but I still have a lot to catch up with.

Ouch, that's a tricky one! I have all the Hitchock films on DVD except "The mountain eagle" from 1927 which is completely lost.
Under appreciated?, Probably "Marnie" (with Sean Connery), "The lady vanishes" (his finest British film with the possible exception of "39 steps") or the wonderful "Rebecca". And I could drool endlessly over "To catch a thief", Grace Kelly never looked better.
Too much credit? Well, I thought "Under capricorn" was his only real turkey, but that seems to be a pretty widespread view. The early silent films are good fun, but not really "Hitchcock's" as such.
Incidentally, it's interesting to count up how many of Hitchcock's films are based on the premise of innocent man wrongly inciminated.
Also worth seeing by the way is the Alfred Hitchock presents TV series. The first 4 series (3 in the UK) are now availble on DVD. Although he did not direct them, Hitchcock's hands are all over them, and he presents each 25 minute episode himself. Many stars and stars of the future appear in them. Great stuff!

That's my favorite. It's just scary enough, just humorous enough, just suspenseful enough, and an all around fun movie.

Vertigo for me. Heart breaking film, and James Stewart gives the performance of a lifetime.....

I've only seen Psycho and The Birds, both were brilliant. Psycho was the better of the two IMO, although I feel bad for it being such a great movie that started a sub-genre filled with mostly duds.
reading the comments I see everyone seems to have different favourites, my 'Movies I absolutely must watch at some point in my life' list just got a whole lot longer. I might forego writing the individual movies and just put a little note saying 'If its by Hitchcock and you havn't yet seen it, get it'
