Topic: Hitchcock FIlms Posted: July 13 2010 at 16:25
Okay, so a forum search did in fact bring up an already-existing Hitch topic, however, it was ages ago and the good mods have locked the thread. So, I thought I would start a new one. I'm in a Hitchcock mood, lately. I showed a friend of mind Rear Window a few days ago, and just got through watching Vertigo for the very first time. I know he has fans here, so let's discuss.
Here's the deal: I'm only listing his most well-known films, and I've given an 'other' option for anyone who is a fan of a more obscure film. All I request is that if you choose that option, to please specify which film you're talking about in a post. I've listed both versions of ''The Man Who Knew Too Much'' individually, since both films deviate significantly from each-other and I consider them two separate works.
The poll isn't meant for you to pick which film you feel is Hitchcock's all-time best; it's for you to show which film is your personal favorite. If the two cross over, that's fine, but we can discuss which film we consider to be his masterpiece in the forum, itself.

I actually found it disappointing, considering all the critical praise it has. It's probably his most visually-arresting work, though. The nightmare sequence alone is worth the 'price of admission', as they say.
But, like I say, I've only just seen it for the first time. I'm sure it will grow on me more over time.

I hate to say it, but I think The Birds is the only one I've seen, so I went for The Birds. I used to have this book of Hitchcock stories called Spellbinders In Suspense.

I can't remember what I thought of that. Only watched it once, if I remember. I think bits of it were pretty funny, but I need to see it again before making a final call.

You seriously need to watch more films than just that one.
I enjoy it, though. Getting ready to watch it again after a few years of being away from it. Probably the worst acting of any Hitch film I've personally seen, but very good regardless of that, somehow.

I too haven't seen enough of them. I have a collection of the most famous 7 or 9 films, yet still haven't watched them.
Of the ones I have seen I like The Birds and North By Northwest the best. I'll give NBN a vote. Better writing/ending on that one IMO.

I have a special thing for "Frenzy". perhaps not Hitchcock's best movie, but it contains one of the most memorable and gruesome scenes of all time (the potato truck scene), and the comic interludes with the inspector and his wife, who is in love with French cuisine but never eats it herself, are highly amusing, Hitchcock's black humor is at its best in this movie. right fromthe very start, by the way, with the politician holding a speech about how clean the rivers have become again just as the corpse in the water is being discovered. in case you don't know the potato truck scene, have a look:

Well, The Birds was better than I remembered, but I was right about the acting. The children were particularly bad, but most of the adult leads were decent. Still, something about the whole concept . . . it's absurd, but freaky.
And, even though I said Vertigo disappointed me earlier today, I still haven't been able to shake it from my mind, hours later. Maybe there's something to that, after all. A few more viewings of it should solidify my verdict.
I'm watching The Trouble with Harry, now. Second or third time I've seen it all the way through.
