^ Amen Thkasabrk! Over the past couple of years, some of the best stuff I've found has been from stuffs thats been around awhile that I've been putting off getting or just discovered that year.

As for the topic at hand...I don't think of this year as any worse than any other year in recent memory (2007 is the first year I really started to pay attention to new releases as they were happening). Its been alright...nothing I've heard yet really stands out from the crowd as being so amazing it can't be topped on 2010. Still half a year to go, and some good stuff is still in the works so perhaps by years end 2010 will be pushed to the  top of the year heap.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

I just purchased an SFF album from 1975 as well. Never too late to discover new bands, even if it is not a brand new release!

Sure there's plenty of stuffs to discover from the 70's and old prog rock is my favourite genre, there's nearly no limit but it's another topic as I was talking about 2010 and new release Wink but it makes me think that the most exciting 2010 release is Ommadawn deluxe limited edition (I can't wait to receive it!!) but it's not really new LOL Some days ago, I discovered The Book Of Invasions by Horslips, something I searched for a long time, 70's celtic folk prog, great!!

In terms of big names, this year hasn't had much to shout about. But if you dig below the surface there have been a number of good releases, especially from Kayo Dot and Alcest for me.

Alcest is great but it's not my fav genre. I don't know Kayo Dot, many people mentioned it here so I have to check them out! Wink

2010 dissapointing? I wouldn't agree. Kayo Dot's Coyote, Spock's Beard's X, Univers Zero's Clivages,Kaipa's In the Wake of Evolution, Karnataka's The Gathering Light, Motorpsycho's Heavy Metal Fruit, Shining Blackjazz, Jaga Jazzist's One-Armed Bandit, Elephant9's Walk the Nile, Metheny's Orchestrion, Panic Room's Satellite... These are all class acts for me.

Isn't the new one from Symphony X due sometime soon? That should be one to look forward too.

I'm anticipating the new Symphony X as well.  The new Iron Maiden should be out soon too.  So far, there have been several great albums out.  The new Ihsahn, High on Fire, Immolation, and Shining albums have all been kicking my ass lately, and the Black Prairie(side project of the Decemberists) debut is excellent as well.  There are several I still need to get, but I've been too busy exploring some older stuff.Tongue

Black Prairie? Is it in the vein of The Decemberists?

I just found that a new Iron Maiden is planned, 2010 finally starts Tongue

The whole thing about any given year is that if you try to evaluate in the middle, there's still half a damned year left.  If you try to evaluate it on the last day, then there's still plenty released late in the year that you haven't been able to try.  Kind of hard for me to evaluate a year in prog music until I get at least a year past it.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Black Prairie is folkier than the Decemberists.  Most of the songs are instrumental and there's no percussion, so it's a bit unusual, at least in my collection.  It's a great album though.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes folk.

Not nearly as good as 2009 so far, but the new Pain of Salvation and Spock's Beard are both fantastic! Clap

I don't think it will be the new KC album at all ... he has admitted that the whole KC thing for him is not fun anymore and he deserves the chance to do anything else but KC.

I would like to see him on the loose again, and be able to go do something with others ... that we would never expect at all. I would like to see him with a Riuichi Sakamoto, or even a Terje Rypdal, or even a couple of the ECM folks ... so that he has a little more fun experimenting and enjoying himself and not have to feel self conscious in doing it and have to mark it down so he can play it again in concert when everyone else wants to hear it! I would also love to see him go have a bit of fun with Peter Hammill again, and Peter Gabriel, and ... if he is not too tired, setup a jam in Los Angeles with Chuck Oken and Richard Pinhas on the old analog noise makers! And have Eno produce it! Ohhh .. .bring Robert Wyatt while you're at it! ... his abc's will definitly liven up the store!

But if all it is, and becomes, is just a bunch of songs ... forget it! You can then say it's over and he is tired!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

As far as I remember, the only albums I'm expecting this year are Epignosis' and Deep Purple's. If there's anything coming out by the Roine Stolt "family", I'll also be interested.

I really want a new Flower Kings album... We're going on three years with no new albums! Confused

I really can't wait for Epignosis either! I really love Still The Waters! Clap

But what has me most excited is the new Iron Maiden.... best heavy metal band ever! Clap Rawks

I have got the new Anathema, the new Pineapple Thief, and PoS' Road Salt One, and all are pretty good IMO.

2010 isn't as good as 2009 yet, I think.

I'll be buying the new Iron Maiden, and the new Opeth, if it makes it out this year.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

It's all about listening. The more you listen these album, the more you will like most of them. And whole year as well.

Some are instant hits - Orphaned Land.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"
