I'm probably not asking anything, I was just picking up on your comment that contract workers were like jobbing musicians - I don't believe that the police officers in this example are like that.

Also, picking up on another comment - benefits, perks, and unemployment compensation are hidden (indirect) salary, gained in lieu of pay-rises during pay negotiations or used as enticements to keep pay demands low. Removing those is an indirect (hidden) pay-cut.

As for taxes, the issue here wasn't with taxes but with spending: The city's deficit is narrowing, ideally meaning less spending and potential tax breaks down the road (but I know better than to think that's how it will play out).
Everything to do with public spending is about taxes. Wink
What?

I wouldn't expect the police force or the fire servce to make a profit - quite the opposite.

And I don't agree with that at all.  Will the people reimburse the shareholders if the hospital becomes insolvent?  No...so the risk/reward makes it not worth trying to open private hospitals.
No shareholders in any private investment get reimbursed when the business files Chapter 11 so why should private hospitals be any different - they'll still get some reward when the hospital is in the black and lose the lot when it's in the red - I'm saying that the reward shouldn't be at the expense of reinvestment, research etc.

Don't understand what you're asking here - surely all student debt is payed for from later earnings regardless of what trade you follow having obtained the requisite qualifications. No one is asking the doctors to work for nothing - they'll be paid the same salary either way and they'll pay off their student loans the same way they always have.

You think private business owners should be directed as to how they must use their profits over a "fair return."  I am opposed to that.

You said it's enough that everyone earns a living.  What I'm saying is that a job that requires 8-10 years of expensive eduction versus one that requires 1-2 years of training (paid training in some cases)...well, I can't see why those two positions should be paid the same if they are both in demand.

I'm not. The reason both our countries are in such a bad way in terms of Manufacturing industries is through lack of investment and reinvestment back into the industry. We "make do" with 20 year old equipment and expect to compete in a market-place where the emergent nations are investing heavily in modern equipment and manufacturing techniques. The ethos of grabbing every last drop of profit and hedging it away in some offshore trust fund has left the West impoverished and broken so that all we can do is cry into our beer and bemoan the workforce for pricing themselves out of the market. The people who invest in our manufacturing industries are not risk-takers, they are the most conservative investors you could imagine who expect an unrealist return on their investment in terms of percentage and time - when managers cannot present such an optimistic forecast in their speculative business plans they inevitably fail to get their captial expediture budgets and so the industry slowly chokes. The service industries will go the same way in the very near future because they are not reinvesting into the infrastructure that supports them and if the health-care "industry" suffers the same fate then I'm buying a leech farm Stern Smile.

Then we are talking at cross-purposes.

I'm not advocating communism here LOL by "earn a living" I wasn't referring to the employees (or contract employees) - they'll get paid whatever they get paid for their profession - the doctors don't own the hospitals. I mean the real owners: the board of governers, shareholders, investment bankers, venture capitalists, insurance companies and other assorted financiers who make their "living" off the toil of others (yeah, that kind of capitalsim Tongue).

So this thread never moves when I got nothing but time, but when I dont look at what happens
Too lazy to read through the pages.
So...Im just gunna say, if Ron Paul becomes President in 2012 and the tea party takes over, I will explode my head by listening to the most bizzare prog I can find at volume 100. Since weed will be legalized by Mr Paul, I want my ashes to be put in joint and smoked by Rob.

And Dean, you're not advocating communism? Well then I no longer want to be here!

You don't need weed to be legal to do that. Unless you want to cut it with weed, which would then make it a spliff, I guess. Of ashes.

I totally know this guy who specializes in human remains spliffs, though. Meet J-Dog under the bridge off Harrison Street between 7 and 9 pm.
