A "toker" is not a comparable case, so I'll ignore that.
The question then is why do married couples get special treatment in the first place. It goes beyond simple tax breaks and benefit payments, but extends legal status on a variety of other matters, which as you say, could be dealt with by other means, but would still require legislation to protect those unable to pay expensoive attorneys.

I don't know why married couples get special treatment. I don't think it's a good thing that they do. As for expensive attorneys, I'm sure the states could develop a simple legal proxy for that. We already have state-run offices where legal documents can be filled out, signed and filed, usually free of charge (even a marriage license costs a small fee). Why not simple state-run offices to deal with the paperwork? |

Marriage is a symbolic personal commitment. A church is only involved by convention. A marriage is just as meaningful with or without a church involved, but if it makes one feel warm and fuzzy inside to make the word "marriage" church only-related, then fine but the personal commitment is what matters.
It infuriates me to see the situation we're in now. A majority of Christians (re: every poll on the topic ever) think gays marrying is an affront to God, but gay couples are denied legal rights because of their diminished status (inheritance, hospital visitation, adoption, etc.). The solution is simple: If a government is going to hand out any benefits to couples for making their relationship official, it should be done equally for gay couples. Any private institution that would normally be punished for refusing to offer equal services based on race, for example, would also be punished for refusing services based on gay civil union status. "Marriage" would be a non-legal, religious, private, supplemental institution that would mean nothing--officially--outside of the religion. These religious types often forget to apply their Golden Rule to the situation. It wouldn't feel good to be denied benefits, status, and respect, now would it? |

Now I have no problem with gay marriage, so I think that right can not be denied.
Whether it has to be done via federal law, or by taking marriage totally out any government hands doesn't matter to me. As long as that right is not infringed upon. Leaving it up to the states would do that. I can't really debate if its "moral" or all that because as a secular liberal, well its like me and Rob and taxes...way different ideological bases. |

You do have to wonder about people who don't want the government to help the needy, but are all for the government intervening when two people want to show their commitment to each other out of love.

tetrapods???? tetrapods???? what about the transphibians? By the way many may not know this but transphibians comes from a sketch on a show called Fridays that tried to compete somewhat it Saturday Night Live. Another bit of trivia: King Crimson did an appearance on the show. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8ilh9_elephant-talk-thela-hun-ginjeet_music Edited by Slartibartfast - June 30 2010 at 19:04 |

Don't take any offense to this JJLehto but you've given me a great example of the perception problem that we currently have in this country:
A lot of people have been trained to view the government as a force for good and private industry as a force for evil. People are people: going into business does not make them automatically evil and going into government doesn't make them automatically good, and vice versa. The problem with these perceptions is that while the market can correct business, and take away whatever powers it gave it, it can not do the same for government. Sure, politicians can be voted out (not that they are: it took former Klansmen Robert C. Byrd's heart giving out at age 92 to get him out of his cushy Senate seat) but when do we get to vote on say, Ben Bernanke? Chairman of the Fed is a far more shadowy, and much more powerful position, to hold than CEO/President of any company because it's a position backed by government force. Hell, it'll take a major power change in November just to get a look at the Fed's books (maybe).
As for the media:
With how the education system is this country is currently run I'm really glad we still have a free media not beholden to the state (though the FCC's a commin'). We'd probably be living in some sort of totalitarian state by now if not for free-market competition in media. FOX News, CNN, and MSNBC (not that anyone watches them) are just presenting the same drivel from different vantage points.
People do need to do their own research but they also need to stop looking at each issue as a chance to join a "team". We need more individualthink and less groupthink.

I do agree with Robert that not being allowed to follow one's life choices is not a violation of the equal protection clause in the constitution. A serial killer is not permitted to follow his life choices, nor is a pedophile. This is not a violation of equal protection. However, I still have no problem with gay marriage.

Aw, this thread got serious again.
Well Anton I can't disagree about the media. In fact I don't at all. It's like I said...use your brain, do some research. If you do, and still don't like Obama/Dems or hold conservative opinions that is 100% fine. This is still America, you can have any opinion you want. I just wish people would think of it on their own. And it goes both ways, I have no doubt there a lot of liberals that mindlessly absorb everything Olberman and Maddow say. I personally watch MSNBC, but I do lots of my own research and just use the sh*t they say as a guide, I guess, and I certainly don't just take everything they say as gold and shut off the brain. As for the government, yeah...I dont have a problem with term limits and why not have a vote/say with Ben Bernanke? Let me be benevolent dictator for a day and I'll fix these things And I did NOT beat around the bush...you guys have been honest in here and so have I. I admitted my bias, Anton. I don't just take every position in the government as good and every business/leader as bad. But hey, I have my biases, I try my best not too but I'm human and I'll fully admit to them. Like I said, even if a consumption tax is something you guys like and ended up being "good" considering those who put it forward...I personally question their true motives behind it.
