I've only heard their 2 most recent albums, so I don't know how much they have changed over the years.
But I would say they have evolved their sound just enough so it isn't repetitive without changing the core vibe too much. Such as some heavier moments.

Worth checking out,

I may not put in a rush order, but I have yet to get a bad personal recommendation on this site.  Even though they seem to be stuck in a bit of rut, I do have four and like them all.  So it goes on my to buy before too long list. Big smile

OK Moviemarz has a good price on it.  Any non pineapple recommendations from this year to go with it?

Univers Zéro's and Xing Sa's are good enough for me.  2009 did have Magma and a (slightly sub-par, in my opinion) Gong album, though.

I find that pretty much EVERY year, people say "this isn't a very good year". When you're living it, it's not apparent what is a classic album because it's too early to be a classic and also you're not just dipping into a readymade list of quality albums like you can for older years. You have to fish through all sorts of experiences. But the same year can look good in hindsight when you've discovered albums you missed at the time, forgotten about bad ones, etc.

Nick Magnus - Children Of Another God is just about the best thing I've heard that has been released this year. Solid 4 star release.Steve Hackett - Out Of The Tunnel's Mouth was a disappointment (2-3 stars at best) and there is also Neal Morse's live 3 cd set So Many Roads which is okay but doesn't really improve on the studio albums.

So far for me, I've had Kayo Dot's Coyote, which is easily one of my favourite ever albums and Alcest's Ecailles De Lune, which is another masterpiece for sure.
Steven Wilson's Cover Version VI was also great, Rick Wakeman's 'Always With You' was surprisingly good, and Bullets In Madison released a great album too.
Kayo Dot also has an EP due by the end of the year, and Blackfield III is 'coming soon' according to KScope.

From 2010 so far I've checked:

Gerard - "Ring of Eternity" (2010) - fantastic album!
Collegium Musicum - "Speak, Memory" (2010) - fantastic concert album!
Borknagar - "Universal" (2010) - so so, like most of their albums
Erik Norlander - "The Galactic Collective"(2010) - not bad but there are only new versions of his older songs
La Maschera di Cera - Petali di fuoco (2010) - not bad, but also not too good
Spock's Beard - "X"(2010) - this one was rather bad for me to be honest...
Ozzy Osbourne - "Scream"(2010) - bad heavy metal album in fact...

I've also heart that there will be released such albums these years:

By veterans:

Black Widow - "Sleeping with the Demons"(2010)
Little Tragedies - "Obsessed"(2010)
Magic Pie - "The Suffering Joy" (2010)
Mangala Vallis - no title yet (2010)
Par Lindh Project - no title yet (2010)

By debutants:

Black Country Communion - "Black Country Communion"(2010, 21.09)
SoulenginE - "Mind Colours"(2010)
KBridge - "Retropolis"(2010)

Also Colossus Records/Musea plans to release another couple of concept albums (probably most of them in 2010)

Various Artists - "THE TALES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE "a syNphonic collection"
Various Artists - "PARADISO "a Progressive Rock Epic"
Various Artists - "THE SPAGHETTI EPIC 4 "a Fistful of Hammonds"
Various Artists - "ILIAD "Progressive Duels on Grand Piano"
Various Artists - "THE DECAMERON - part 1 "4 Days in 40 Novels"
Various Artists - "The Strange Case of Dr Hammond & Mr Moog: A Progressive Rock Novella in Four Movements"

(and already released: Various Artists - CANI ARRABBIATI "Opening themes... a tribute"(2010), but I haven't checked this one yet)

BTW Especially "THE SPAGHETTI EPIC 4 "a Fistful of Hammonds" & "The Strange Case of Dr Hammond & Mr Moog: A Progressive Rock Novella in Four Movements" sound good for me Smile

So it seems it will be quite good year :-)

I've found some good progressive music in 2010: Karnataka, The Pineapple Thief, God Is An Astronaut, Frames, Areknamès ...

It seems that a lot of people are talking about the new Karnataka album, considering that the two times I've seen them live they bored me silly (the last time included at least one song off the new album as well) should I bother getting it?

Same here... I checked them but I don't really hear what's so good about them. And I don't really like the vocals Confused

I'm the OP and you can check my topics, I never wrote this kind of topic about 2006/2007/2008 or 2009. I just find there's no "huge awesome album" in 2010 yet. But I admit this is totally subjective. It will be hard to beat Magma, Transatlantic, Astra, The Decemberists, The Mars Volta or Riverside...

I hope that Wobbler will release something this year...

Last I heard (which was March), they were almost done recording the new album. They also have a bunch of youtube vids of the recording process ... you can see them here: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=77259223&blogId=530987589

Moon Safari is also supposed to have a new album out in the near future, and I think I heard somewhere Beardfish would have one out this fall (consider my fingers officially crossed on that one).

Meat Loaf released an album this year too which is pretty alright (I'm only two listens in so it might get better too)

That will be my favourite album of the year!

It might be of interest that Par Lindh had collaborated with Steve and John Hackett plus Marco Lo Muscio for concept peice based on the writings of Tolkien. OK its yet another LOFTR inspired peice and strictly classical in approach to my ears but it sounds very nice. The website link provides a 10 minute sample plus images.

Yeah, Rachel Cohen is by far a better singer than Lisa Fury. A hell of a lot more stage prescence a well.

Even if Wobbler are "nearly finnished" with album 3, remember that they are notoriously slow at getting them out so it could be another year yet, especially since Lars is working with Jacob Holm-Lupo on anew White Willow album at the moment.

In terms of big names, this year hasn't had much to shout about. But if you dig below the surface there have been a number of good releases, especially from Kayo Dot and Alcest for me.

2010 may be disappointing in the new release category, but I am spending a lot of time (and money) discovering bands such as Abel Ganz, Neuschwanstein, and Aquaplanage, as well as some older bands that I had not heard in a long time. I just purchased an SFF album from 1975 as well. Never too late to discover new bands, even if it is not a brand new release!
