Topic: Disappointing 2010 or... Posted: June 29 2010 at 10:51 |
I just don't like modern prog anymore?
I found 2009 interesting with albums by Magma, Transatlantic, Riverside,
The Decemberists, IQ, Astra, Gargamel, Mastodon, Guilt Machine
Porcupine Tree or The Mars Volta... Some very good albums.
But 2010 sounds less interesting to my ears and I'm disappointed by what
I listened to so far apart from the new Anathema and Vanden Plas (as an
Images and Words and The God Thing fan, I needed some classic 90's
metal prog ).
I'm more of a 70's prog rock fan but I keep my ear opened for new music. I don't pretend to have listen to anything hopefully but I thought
you could help me to find 2010 gems
Thanks

Yeah, 2010 doesn't compare with 2009 so far, and I didn't think 2009 was especially good. However most interesting albums are usually released in the autumn, so I still have hopes.

I wouldnt say its been great but its not been a bad year from my point of view. We've had excellent albums from:
Alcest- Ecailles de Lune
Borknagar- Universal
Ihsahn- After
Kayo Dot- Coyote (one of the best albums I've ever heard to be honest)
Pain of Salvation- Road Salt One
Red Sparowes- The Fear is Excruciating, but Therein Lies the Answer
Rosetta- A Determinism of Morality
I also have the new Canvas Soalris and Yakuza albums on order so I'm looking forward to them, KD has a new EP out later this year as well and then there's a new White Willow album comeing too, so not it shouldnt be a bad year at all.

Myself I'm looking forward to the Fripp & friends album, which is going to be actually the new King Crimson album but in disguise.

The new Karnataka album is better than everything you mentioned for 2009, except maybe Crack the Skye and The Incident.

Oddly enough or maybe not, I've only got one from 2010 this year so far. That's the Jeff Beck Emotion And Commotion, which I rather like. Sometimes it takes you a while to catch up with year. I'm looking forward to the new Porcupine Tree DVD and the Atlanta live album. I'm probably overlooking others. Sometimes you have to sit back and enjoy what you already have as well as explore stuff from previous years.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

This really is a great one and Anaon, if you like the seventies stuff this is a triumphant return for RRR who only released one album back then and then split. You might also check out the new La Maschera Di Cera.

This year has pretty much been a bust for me. Biggest disappointment would have to be Pain of Salvation's Road Salt. I'm expecting RS: 2 to be more of the same so I won't be disappointed. The new Anethema is extremely boring as well.
