Ok, so apparently I'm in a bad mood this morning.  I will be combating this with a combination of "The FLower Kings", "Genesis" and "They Might be Giants".

Wish me luck, no one likes a grumpy sales rep.

I don't believe that people who makes dvd are screwing us all by replacing the sound of a show by overdubbs! I am curious to know waht big bands do that? Nice interviews, by the way!

What I love about The Flower Kings is their ability to create meaningful and emotional music while still maintaining unbelievable musicianship.

No problem.  Your's is a hyperlink and mine isn't, so you did a better job posting it than I did Smile

Hello all,

Ok, so I'm posting something that has absolutely no relation to The Flower Kings in part as an excuse to bump the thread and also because it's the best way that I know to share this with the regulars of the thread.  Over the past few years of FK posting, you all have kind of become friends (you too Henk if you're reading).  Even though the FK talk has died down, doesn't mean we can't still talk about music in general.

With that being said, E-Dub posted a you tube video the other day that I had to share (Thanks E).  If you like Supertramp, E found a beautiful version of Roger Hodgson (their lead singer) performing "Fool's Overture" with an orchestra and choir.  Honestly, I had goosebumps when I watched the video, the recording is beautiful.

Enjoy, if you're a fan of the song, this may blow you away.

Thanks Tom - that really is absolutely incredible and so beautiful. A great version of one of my favourite songs (and bigClapClap to Eric)

Thought I'd just say hello again and give a brief Nearfest review, even though there was no Flower Kings related music there (well, not really).

Hackett was amazing as always, with a stunning band and great set list.  Never get tired of hearing him play the solo to Firth Of Fifth.  But then, I never get tired of hearing him solo to anything.

Three friends was also amazing.  Hearing all that Gentle Giant performed by a very tight band with Gary Green's excellent guitar work to the fore was a real treat.  Much of the set was material the original band never played live, along with a few favorite that they did.  Excellent show and well worth catching if you like GG at all.

The Enid was absolutely incredible and the best band at the fest without a doubt.  If you like symphonic prog at all, you can't possibly dislike their latest album, which they performed in its entirety, pretty much as one long piece (though the album isn't one long piece I don't think).  Classical music with rock instruments (and some well done vocals) pretty much sums up their sound.  They had Timpani on stage (orchestra percussion instruments, if you didn't know) played by the bass player, but the rest was your typical bass, drums, guitars, and a slew of keyboards.  Anyway, great great stuff that I'd recommend to any sympho lover.

The rest of the bands were not as good as those three for me.  Riverside was pretty cool, though I find their music pretty samey and was getting a bit tired of it by the end of their one hour set.  But still a good band I hadn't heard before with some pretty good material.  Astra was fairly dull and repetitive, though I liked the spacey atmospheres somewhat.  But they really need to focus on songs more than grooves.  Forgas Band Phenomenon were all great players, playing a kind of jazz rock / Canterbury or something.  Fun to watch but not really something I want to listen to regularly.  Pineapple Thief started out as not very enjoyable (sounding a lot like Muse or Radiohead, though a bit less melodic than either) but pulled me in with their longer and more proggy pieces.  Lost me on the encore though, with another uninteresting alt rock type song.  Iona was quite beautiful with celtic and symphonic sounds, featuring a great female singer.  They were actually one of my favorites as well, playing high quality mellow prog.  Good stuff.

Finally, Eddie Jobson's UKZ project.  A good time, as they played some Crimson (Starless and Bible Black, Red), a lot of UK material which was nice to hear live, and even an ELP tune (Bitches Crystal).  Pretty good, though my girlfriend and I left about 2/3 of the way through because we were tired of sitting and were getting a bit burnt out from the constant prog onslaught of the weekend.  The band had two drummers, both great, which seemed like a good idea on paper, but in practice was mostly just really loud often drowning out the guitar and bass (and sometimes even the keys).  They did a drum solo as well, which wasn't really my thing, being a kind of "look what we can do" type of thing rather than a musical type of thing.

All in all, a great time seeing old friends and meeting some people I'd only met online.  Picked up the new La Maschera di Cerra album, Secret Green, the new Frogg Cafe album (which is incredible), the latest Hackett album (special edition with a live CD added, for only $15!.....easily his best album since Spectral Mornings)  and the latest Kaipa (kind of an impulse buy, but I'd been wanting to hear how they are without Stolt).

^ A nice review there Mike.  Glad you had a good time.  I saw a review posted by micky on a "nearfest thread" and it sounds like it was a great festival.

Over here the only real prog festival we have is Summers End.  This year it's Phideaux, and a Karmakanic/Agents Of Mercy Power of 2 combo.  Sounds great doesn't it?  The only shame is whilst those guys are hitting the boards in blighty I'll be over on the other side of the pond in the States for a week Angry.  Now I'm certainly looking forward to my holiday, but talk about perfect timing eh Ouch.

I don't know about you guys but 2010 isn't really grabbing me new album-wise.  Now I've bought a ton of albums this year, but they're virtually all from 08, 09 etc.  There's just nothing I've really wanted to go out and buy instantly.  In fact I think I only have 2 new albums from this year:-

1.  Kaipa - In The Wake Of Evolution
2.  The Black Dog - Music For Real Airports

The former is a fab cd and I reckon it'll take something special to oust that as my favourite of the year.  A truly brilliant album.  On the IDM front, after a lean (and ropey) spell TBD have been releasing an album a year lately and all bloody good stuff too - a real return to form.  This latest is a fairly ambient effort and certainly hits the spot, though not as good as their last two which were stunning.

And, that's it...... Nothing else.  Perhaps it's just the sheer volume of new prog albums released last year that's causing a 2010 drought.

Incidentally, wasn't 2009 a fabulous year for prog?

2009 was, indeed, a vintage year, and I am still buying new albums from it. I've only got four 2010 albums so far; Asia's new one, Gabriel's new one, and The Reasonings, all of which I would consider essential to my collection to personal taste, and The pineapple Thief on a whim after reading reviews on this site. The juries still out on this, as I do find much of it very Radiohead/Muse like, but other parts sublime.

I am, though, a bit more selective in what I buy these days, for the simple reason that I can't afford to buy the same volume of music as when I was single.

2010 hasn't been so bad for me. Not as great as 2009, but I haven't spent as much money, so that is a good thing. I've gotten less albums this year than I did last year, but every album I've gotten so far has been excellent. Here are the five albums that I feel are the best so far this year:

1. Spock's Beard- X
2. Mars Hollow- Mars Hollow
3. Unitopia- Artificial
4. Kaipa- In The Wake of Evolution
5. Pain of Salvation- Road Salt One

The big disappointment for me is that it doesn't seem that there will be a new Neal Morse album this year, which I guess is forgivable after the big Transatlantic reunion last year. I am really looking forward to the new Agents of Mercy, however, that should be out later this year. I wouldn't give up hope on 2010 yet.

Oh! How could I forget the excellent live album from Frost*- The Philadelphia Experiment? I think it is a must own for Frost* fans and it sounds awesome to me, and I am not usually a huge fan of live albums.

Oops.  Confession time, I'd forgotten about the Spocks Beard and Frost cds Embarrassed.  Those are two new albums that I do need to get round to buying.

As for the forthcoming Agents Of Mercy album, the portents are very good for that one.  I do indeed have great expectations of that one owing to what I hear on the grapevine...

I'm really looking forward to both the Beard and the Agent's of Mercy CD.  I half way expected to get X for Father's day but alas.  Once the hubub dies down I'll order the CD.  Shoot, I don't know if I've picked anything new up this year.  yet...

Well, I'll have to hear some of the new Spock's to even consider spending money on it.........and even then, I'll likely pass (unless it sounds stellar to me......sorry, I find this rather unlikely at this point in SB's existence, but you never know I guess).  Still haven't listened to the Kaipa that I picked up at Nearfest.  Have to get to that soon.

Like everyone here, I'm very much looking forward to the new Agents album.

The past two years though, I just haven't been able to buy much of anything.  My 4 CD's from Nearfest (and The Enid's new album that I had to order online) are probably it for me this year, along with the Agents.  I haven't even bought the Power Of 2 live album.  There is so much I want to buy, but just don't see it happening anytime soon.

So far though, I'm extremely impressed with the new Frogg Cafe album.  Probably a bit on the weird side for most people here, but the writing on it is just incredible.  Of the few I've heard so far this year, it is probably far and away the best, from a prog standpoint.  As far as my tastes go, I'll wait until December or so and see what the year still has in store before I start talking about my top 2010 albums.

Maybe these reviews will convince you: http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201038.php

For me it's easily the best post-Neal album and better than at least a couple of the Neal-era albums as well.

Buy it  Wink

Ok, so the latest trend is apparently to "stamp" bands.  As best as I can figure out, it's picking a single song to represent the band.  So why not The Flower Kings?

What's your choice?

Me, I'm going to go with the obvious and select "I Am the Sun" and I'm taking the liberty of including both part one and two.  It has everything that you could want in a Flower Kings song.  A hard rocking section, a discordant jazzy section, a melodic little ditty and of course the epic finale as only Roine can do.  It features catchy hooks, excellent atmosphere, top notch musicianship and fantastic vocals.

What are your thoughts?

I would go for 'The Flower King' by Roine Stolt, it really defined the sound of The Flower Kings for me. There's the semi-cheesy stuff, the up-lifting melodies, the great guitar work, the keys and the fantastic composition.

Latest trend, huh? Wondered who started that one? Big smile.  I couldn't even fathom a guess as to a good answer.  I have every Flower Kings studio album and I feel like I could barely choose.  I am so frustrated with music right now. I have no time to listen to anything.  I was just thinking about TFK and that I should put some on since it has been awhile.  Flower Power came to mind and maybe that would be the best stamp. It has everything we love and everything a lot of people hate about the band.  If you appreciate Flower Power, you are a true blue TFK fan.

My choice would probably be the full I Am The Sun too.  That is just such an amazing piece, so diverse and with all the magical traits of TFK that we love.  Great themes, uplifting melodies, humour, superb musicianship, atmospheric and an incredibly emotional conclusion.  Like Tom, it's my favourite song ever.

The only other real contender for me is the entire Garden Of Dreams...
