...Yeah, I would say get Moving Pictures. If you don't like anything from that, maybe you should stop listening to them, IMO.

I get the not liking Geddy's singing. It was certainly an acquired taste for me, and he hits some notes on those early albums that still make me cringe, but for the most part I grew used to them and actually like them. In regards to not liking Neil's lyrics I am sort of clueless there, as for the most part I love his lyrics, aside from the notorious Dog Years. So from that standpoint I can't help you. It does seem to me that songs like The Spirit of Radio and Freewill should appeal to you (both are on Permanent Waves) but what the hell do I know.

Watching the Rush film the other day there were some very funny music critics desciptions of Geddy Lee's voice ,the best being 'like a cat being chased out of a room with a blow torch up its arse!!'
As a kid I was actually convinced that the lead singer was a woman and said as such to a keen Rush fan which didn't go down well.
Anwyay appreciating what you have? Convert every album into MP3 form and then play the tracks randomly mixed in with other bands you like. This worked for me in the case of Gentle Giant and Porcupine Tree. If not then just stop flogging a dead horse and get rid of them.

As I've recounted before, Rush is ironically how I found PA.
I actually did not like them when I first heard them (1979-80). They were in regular rotation on the AOR station here in Seattle. Then I eventually heard Limelight and bought Moving Pictures. As others have mentioned, it is a very good album, Geddy's voice -- which someone has described as Donald Duck on helium -- notwithstading.
That said, the tracks I heard from subsequent albums over the next 20 years didn't do much for me, though I started revisiting the band via the Retrospectives albums around five years ago. I subsequently bought Feedback and Snakes & Arrows, both of which are decent enough outings.
To my surprise Rush -- even the early tracks -- sound much better now that I'm well into my middle age. With all due respect to the band, who have progressed a long way from those early albums, I attribute this to three things: 1) my hearing ain't what it used to be; 2) Geddy's voice has calmed down a bit to my ears (see 1)); 3) they are still better that 90% of everything else that's out there.
I'm looking forward to their next studio album, but I'll be visiting PA looking for reviews before I buy it  |

Walter- Permanent Waves is the only Rush album I would ever intentionally listen to. Just sell all of yours and get that

Having seen your taste form other threads, I would have never have recommended any of these to you. I consider myself a big Rush fan, but like none of these albums (except for some of AFtK). I believe that Exit...Stage Left is the best example of Rush in their "prog" prime, a live album with great energy and inspired performances - includes fantastic renditions of Villa Strangiato, Xanadu, Jacob's Ladder...if these don't strike you in any way, then I'd move on. Sometimes it means it's either just not your thing, and sometimes it means it's just not your thing right now. There are plenty of albums that I disliked at first, then revisited years later to find they were just what I was looking for (Miles Davis and King Crimson were like this for me)

hi, i recommend you get a copy of hemispheres,but as has been said,if you don"t get them,you probably won"t like hemispheres either! myself,i count it as one of my finest prog albums and they have never produced anything near it! but each to their own,we"ve all got our likes and dislikes.i actually stopped buying rush albums after grace under pressure,as their later work didn"t do it for me either! as i"m a musician myself,i understand the loss of ambition in writing capabilities when you get older! this is why so many top bands draw from their older songs when they play live-it"s often their best music.

You dont like them, so what? Moving Pictures is my favourite and I guess if you like Signals, you think MP is ok, but to be honest it;s hardly worth investing more money in band, who I really think you probably have the gist of by now. You've got albums from all their eras in your collection. You know what the Rush philosophy to making music is by now.
They're not for everyone....same can be said for King Crimson and Zappa.

I'm still trying to make Fripp amazing for someone. As for the stuff you already have, there are options. Do another listen, sell it, toss it in the trash, or attempt to play Frisbee with the discs.

I don't really like them either. But Hemispheres was always there best to me. Definitely their most progressive.

Haven't we be down this road before? Collect A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure, Signals and then be happy and live a good life (sorry but Permanent Waves is a little too goofy for my liking).
