Read the book.  It's a pretty easy read, and it will help you understand the plot better.  The ending is still open for your own interpretation though.  You are right, Juan; the effect after watching the movie is powerful.  I think the fact that it is discussed so much is a testament to its greatness.

Hmm, I'm not a huge fan of IM, though I do like the galloping bass lines. Still, interesting.  I just hope it's not a case of an album made long solely to be a long album (Gong's 2032 anyone?)
