it's like, Metallica has the word "Metal" in their band name.
So I kinda wanna name my band "Prog-something"
And I'm a Girls Aloud fan.
So I was thinking

Prog A-something
Prog A-something

of course, Prog Ahead!

some other names that I came up with: Prog Alive, Prog Awake, Prog Abyss, Prog Alarm, Prog Armor

There are tons of bands with this name or with "Ahead + something" or "something + Ahead" names, so no, it's not a good name.

No. I think it's generally a bad idea to link a band name to a particular genre. What if you progress?

Progica, prog attack, proghead, ELProg, Progesis, Prog Crimson, Jethro Prog, Prog of Salvation, Progpeth, Progric Tentacles, Progupine Tree, Prog Theater, Progathema..

Huh, I forgot what my point was and proceeded to just add prog to a bunch of exsisting names. It was fun though Smile

it's a terrible idea Tongue it says that all of your inspirations come from prog, when they should from more substantial genres like blues, folk, classical, avantgarde Wacko

Notice how Metallica is hardly metal anymore.

Metallica is still a great name

remember they were doing metal when it was only in its birth pangs, others jumped on the bandwagon because they were inspired by Metallica

It would be weird to call a band Prog something but you could allude to it using words Progressive or Progulus, personally i think a great name for a band is SmellyoldLOLbums, imagine that... Here they are all the way from Michoigan, please give it up for SMELLYOLDBUMS!!!!!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAY!

After all, there's already Funkadelic and too many "jazz" bands with "jazz" in their name (not to mention the metal bands with "metal" in their name).
But the whole idea is... Er, I prefer not to put any word on the idea of naming a band from the genre it's supposed to play: it's like calling your son "Wolfgang Amadeus" and trying to raise him as a musician, while the kid would show more abilities for writing or painting.

The name "Prog Ahead" doesn't only sound like something incredibly pretentious and annoying and something I'd like to kick in the crotch multiple times for being THAT pretentious, but as well, it sounds incredibly sexual.

If you keep reading it again and again, it sounds like...

...

...Nevermind

It's probably not a great idea, especially if you're trying to write serious music. 'Prog' in itself shouldnt be considered a genre, but a state of mind. Saying right out that you're 'forward thinking' isn't right, people should be able to tell from your music. =)

I always hated name Emerson, Lake & Palmer - it's like shoving in the face "we're famous" :D because of that it took me some time till I decided to give it a try

Yet it's a genre.  As seen by this website.
